Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Limited

Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display to Construct 2nd PDP Production Plant

Tokyo, October 28, 1999 -- Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Limited (FHP) announced today that it will construct a new production facility in Kunitomi, Miyazaki (Japan) to accommodate expected growth in the market for plasma display panels (PDPs). The new plant will augment the currently operating production line of wholly owned subsidiary Kyushu FHP Limited at the same location, which has a capacity of 10,000 units per month.

The large screen size, thinness, luminosity, and digital operation of FHP's PDPs are ideal for the emerging digital television market, which is projected to take off with the launch of BS digital broadcasting in Japan at the end of 2000. The company anticipates that the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2002 Soccer World Cup co-hosted by Japan and South Korea will further boost demand in this market.

As the expansion of the Internet shows, the ever-advancing wave of digitalization can be expected to drive demand for large displays not only in public and corporate sectors but among households as well. In order to put in place a production system that can serve this growing market, FHP has decided to construct a new full-fledged mass production plant. Details are as follows:

Location : 1815 Tajiri, Kunitomi-cho, Higashi Morokata-gun, Miyazaki-ken, Japan 880-1194
Commencement of Construction : November 1999
Start-Up Date : October 2000
Area : about 56,000 square meters
Production Capacity : 60,000 units per month (on a 42-inch basis)
Planned Investment : about 45 billion yen (includes buildings)
Products : ALIS-type PDPs for high-definition television and for other applications, such as information displays

Taking full advantage of the fruits of ongoing cooperative development activities that Fujitsu and Hitachi have been carrying out since August of last year, and by adopting and improving upon the latest production technology incorporated in the current lines, FHP expects the new production facility to increase productivity by a factor of three over current production operations, thereby improving overall cost competitiveness.

The new plant will also incoporate numerous environmental protection design features, including an efficient water recycling system and a cogeneration system to ensure a "clean" and stable power supply.
