Fujitsu's New TeamPad 7500 Hand-held Terminal With Thin Client Technology Greatly Reduces Total Cost of Ownership
- First Thin-Client Hand-held to Feature SS Wireless LAN as Standard -
Tokyo, January 18, 1999 -- Fujitsu Limited today introduced the TeamPad 7500, a new hand-held terminal that comes with SS wireless LAN as standard and utilizes thin client technology to greatly reduce operational and management costs. The TeamPad 7500 will go on sale in the Japanese market tomorrow, with overseas sales to commence shortly.
The TeamPad series of hand-held terminals is key element of @RETAILVISION, Fujitsu's total system solution for the retail industry. The series includes a broad range of hand-held terminals, such as information displays, general purpose terminals and bar code readers, designed to meet a wide variety of retailers' needs. In recent years retailers have been demanding more sophisticated applications to handle expanded data requirements, such as graphical display of past sales information and product images. Previously, in order to introduce such advanced applications, emphasis has been placed on expanding the resources of the hand-held terminal itself by adding larger amounts of flash ROM and introducing higher-speed CPUs. However, this has tended to increase application maintenance costs as well as the time needed for exchanging data with the server.
Adopting a thin client model based on Windows-based Terminal technology, Fujitsu's new TeamPad 7500 enables applications formerly residing on the hand-held terminal to be located on the server. Customers' field staff are thus able to carry about compact hand-held devices that require fewer resources and whose application programs can be efficiently managed at the server level, rather than at each terminal. Furthermore, because screen information and operations input by the customer are the only things to be exchanged between the terminal and the server, transmission speeds between terminal and server are much faster. And with SS wireless LAN installed as standard equipment, it is possible to exchange data with the server without having to purchase separate specialized cards.
The TeamPad 7500 is equipped with an 800 x 600 SVGA color LCD, weighs only 850 grams, and will be offered in the Japan market at a list price of just 388,000 yen. Positioned as a global product, the TeamPad 7500 will be sold by Fujitsu subsidiaries in North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania, along with other TeamPad products. Fujitsu has set a worldwide sales target of 70,000 TeamPad 7500 units over the next three years.
