Tokyo, April 21, 1999 -- Fujitsu Limited today concluded an agreement with Okaya Electric Industries Co., Ltd. to transfer its monochrome Plasma Display Panel (PDP) business operations to Okaya Electric. Fujitsu Transfers Monochrome PDP Operations to Okaya Electric Industries
Fujitsu has been a leader in the development and manufacture of AC (alternating current)-type monochrome PDPs since the 1970s. Due to their high degree of brightness, wide viewing angle and long life cycle, AC-type PDPs have been widely used in a variety of information displays, such as railway automatic ticket vending machines and ticket-scanning gate systems. Based on its early lead in monochrome PDP technology, Fujitsu advanced into research and development of large-size full-color PDPs and succeeded in pioneering commercial-scale production of 42-inch full-color PDPs in 1995.
Today's agreement marks the ending of Fujitsu's involvement with the monochrome PDP business, while allowing the company to consolidate resources to expand its large-screen full-color PDP business operations. Anticipating significant growth in this market segment in coming years, Fujitsu and Hitachi Ltd. recently agreed to establish a joint venture, Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Limited, to develop, manufacture and market large-screen color PDPs.
With its acquisition of Fujitsu's technology and business, Okaya Electric, which has been manufacturing and marketing DC (direct current)-type monochrome PDPs, will be able to expand its business to AC-type PDPs as well. The agreement includes AC-type PDP technology transfer, continued production and supply for some current customers, and partial transfer of production facilities. The transfer-of-business agreement is valued at around 30 million yen.
Okaya Electric aims to start shipment of AC-type monochrome PDPs in October, after making necessary adjustments to its production process in accordance with the technology transfer agreement.
