Fujitsu Announces Double Data Rate Synchronous DRAM and Module

Tokyo, September 28, 1998--- Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of Double Data Rate Synchronous DRAMs (DDR SDRAMs) and modules.

The discrete devices developed by Fujitsu are 64M bit DDR SDRAMs in three different organizations, MB81P64447A (16Mx4), MB81P64847A (8Mx8), and MB81P641647A (4Mx16). Sample shipment will start in November 1998 and production will ramp up next February.

The DDR SDRAM modules, which are in 184pin DIMM format, come in both non-ECC type (64bit I/O) and ECC type (72bit I/O) with four different configurations, MB8508P064AA (8Mx64) and MB8516P064AA (16Mx64) for non-ECC type and MB8508P072AA (8Mx72) and MB8116P072AA (16Mx72) for ECC type. Sample shipment will start in November 1998 and production will ramp up next February.

The DDR SDRAM uses new circuit architecture and realizes two times faster data transfer rate comparing to today's Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM). In case of 100MHz clock input, the data transfer rate reaches 200MHz while that of today's SDRAM stays in 100Mhz. This means the peak data transfer rate is 200M Byte per second per device (x8 I/O configuration case) and 1.6G Byte per second per module.

Because the products incorporate an on-chip-DLL circuit, the data output signal is fully synchronized to the clock, dramatically improving the clock access time. A new bi-directional data strobe signal and a new interface, SSTL-2.5, also help improve performance. All of those new features fully comply with industry standard. With these new capabilities, DDR SDRAM reduce the difficulty of maintaining the data valid window and noise margin that are always a challenge in high speed system design.

This DDR SDRAM is ideally suitable for PC, Main Frame, Server, Multimedia Graphics and the other application that require a great deal of memory and/or high bandwidth.
