Fujitsu Develops the FR80, Highest-Performance CPU Core for 32-bit RISC MCUsMicrocontrollers for Digital Home Appliances -- Tokyo, October 28, 2003 --Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of the FR80, the most powerful processor core to date for its FR family of 32-bit RISC microcontrollers that are primarily used in digital home appliances. In the digital home appliance market, which has been one of the main target markets for Fujitsu's FR family of microcontrollers, the introduction of digital broadcasting in Japan is expected to spark widespread demand for digital televisions, DVD recorders and HDD recorders. Accordingly, there is a growing need for a high-performance CPU that can accommodate the performance requirements of these products. Fujitsu has responded to this need by developing the FR80 core, which offers the highest processing power yet for the FR family of microcontrollers. The FR80 core with optimized architecture will be manufactured with a 0.18 micrometers () process technology, enabling it to run at clock speeds of up to 200 MHz, roughly double the speed of earlier FR family products. At 200 MHz, FR80 chips can process 259 MIPS, while consuming only 140 milliamperes (mA) of current, or 0.54 mA per MIPS, among the best performance ratios in the industry for 32-bit RISC processors using 0.18 technology. Moreover, the FR80 is compatible with the existing FR family instruction set, enabling customers already using FR chips to upgrade without having to replace their existing software resources. Along with the FR80 core architecture, Fujitsu is able to provide evaluation devices, evaluation kits, and programming-support tools Softune Workbench (*1) and the NEXTiCE series. These tools will enable customers to simplify the tasks of product development and performance evaluation. Fujitsu plans to launch new products using the FR80 for the digital home appliance market by the end of 2004. The company will also continue to expand the FR family with products combining Fujitsu's proprietary SoC technology with embedded flash memory to meet customer needs for high-performance system controllers that can power digital home appliances, networking equipment, and automotive systems.
