Fujitsu and KAL Collaborate in
IFX-SOAP/XML Solution for Banking ATMs

Tokyo, October 31, 2002-Fujitsu Limited and KAL today announced that they are jointly developing a banking ATM solution based on the new IFX protocol. The solution consists of an OEM application developed by KAL for the ATM side and an ATM switch server solution developed by Fujitsu. IFX (the Interactive Financial eXchange Forum) is the emerging open standard protocol for communication between ATMs and ATM switches, based on advanced XML technology and SOAP-HTTP transport(*). A consortium of companies representing a cross-section of the banking and information systems industries is developing the IFX standard. Fujitsu is the first Japanese ATM manufacturer to join the forum. The goal of the IFX consortium is to replace the myriad of proprietary protocols with a single web-based open standard in order to greatly simplify development and support of financial transactions.

Fujitsu and KAL joined forces for this project in Japan earlier this year, and their development team includes some of the premier specialists in the ATM, XML and EAI fields. The companies' joint solution is being developed based on the newly released (September 23, 2002) IFX 1.0 SOAP Implementation Document, using a truly open architecture including the use of advanced XML technology and SOAP over HTTP. In addition, the implementation of Fujitsu and KAL's IFX-SOAP/XML solution is expected to lead to a new generation of flexible application architectures that simplify the addition of new financial and non-financial services to the ATM environment and for a variety of business sectors.

The new solution uses Fujitsu's advanced XML technology, including its powerful, top-selling EAI software, Interstage CollaborationRing (UNIX/Win), as an IFX-SOAP/XML ATM Switch Server to connect to the ATM via IFX-SOAP/XML for messaging and data format exchange. Fujitsu's 8000 Series ATM is used for the ATM hardware platform, and is based on KAL's flagship Kalignite middleware product and new OEM application for IFX. Further details and a demonstration of the IFX-SOAP/XML solution will be made at the upcoming BAI Retail Delivery Conference & Expo 2002, the world's premier financial retail delivery show, to be held November 4 - 7, 2002 in Atlanta, USA.

The retail banking industry demands efficient, secure authentication and payment systems using web-based technologies. However, current legacy mechanisms were not designed to support emerging web-based applications and IP-based connectivity. These factors suggest that the IFX-based solution will become highly popular in the financial industry, and Fujitsu and KAL, both world leaders in open ATM systems, see this as an important step toward its widespread adoption.
