Fujitsu Develops Technology to Enable Seamless Roaming Among Wireless LANs, 3G and Other Mobile Networks
Tokyo, May 14, 2002-Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced that it has developed new networking technology that makes possible seamless roaming among wireless LANs, IMT-2000 (3G) and other wireless networks. The technology would provide mobile users uninterrupted connectivity without even having to be aware of which network they were accessing. For example, users could automatically and continuously connect to the Internet or their company LAN from a wireless LAN hotspot and, when on the move, through an IMT-2000 wireless terminal. Links with hotspot services are expected to make mobile Internet even easier to use.
Background
Demand for multi-network access that can use heterogeneous wireless networks has grown in recent years, with the advent of hotspot services, in particular, heightening the importance of linking wireless LANs with public mobile communications infrastructure, such as IMT-2000, PHS and other cell phone networks. At present, however, users need to know what network to use, and to select and configure their terminals accordingly. On top of that, there is the problem of having to re-start any pending data transfers when switching from one network to another. The desire to eliminate these inconveniences has driven the development of a technology for seamless roaming among different networks.
About the Technology
Fujitsu's newly developed seamless networking technology comprises terminal middleware for automatic network selection and configuration, and technology for session preservation when roaming across different networks linked by Mobile IP*1. Key features include:
- a "personal agent" function to manage the user's connection configurations and applications,
- a "network agent" function to manage and control network status, and
- wireless TCP technology that quickly re-starts data transmission after switching networks.
These technologies enable the user to automatically connect to the most appropriate network, as defined by the user's preferences, and to run all necessary applications. Moreover, the user can smoothly run these applications without having to worry about network status or problems occurring when switching from one network to another. Even users not versed in the technical details of computers and networks can more easily enjoy mobile computing, and, when applied to corporate solutions, the technology is also expected to help to raise productivity and lower communications costs.
Fujitsu plans to incorporate the new technology in applicable products as part of its wireless LAN solutions offerings.
- Glossary
- 1: Mobile IP is an Internet technology standard for maintaining the same IP address when in transit.
