Fujitsu Laboratories Establishes European Base for
Basic and Applied Research

Will Collaborate with Academic and Research Institutions throughout Europe

FLE
Hayes Park will from June be home to Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe.

London/Kawasaki, April 3, 2001--- Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced that it has established Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe Limited, headquartered in the greater London area, to carry out basic and applied research activities throughout Europe in Fujitsu's key business areas, including information processing, telecommunications, electronic devices and services and software.

The new lab will draw on Europe's outstanding research resources, including research talent, knowledge, facilities and publicly funded initiatives, to strengthen the research capabilities of Fujitsu Laboratories and support Fujitsu's future business development. At the same time, through various activities, such as active participation in standardization initiatives and academic conferences, Fujitsu's new lab intends to contribute to Europe's industrial and academic vitality. Along with planting seeds for future business growth in the European region, the new lab will be a pillar in Fujitsu's global research organization spanning Japan, the US, Europe and China.

Since its establishment in 1962 as a research institute to support Fujitsu's development of leading-edge technology, Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. has carried out a wide range of research activities in all of Fujitsu's core business areas. It takes pride in the contributions it has made over the years, anticipating the technological trends of each era - from the spread of PC usage throughout society to the development of cellular phone networks and semiconductor technology - and helping to spur technological innovation.

As the pace of technological development accelerates in the 21st century, fundamental research is going to become more important than ever, and Europe and the US have many long-established and excellent basic research institutions. Establishing mutually beneficial cooperative ties with these organizations has thus become an important objective of the Fujitsu Group.

Fujitsu Laboratories Europe will focus on applied and basic research as well as standardization efforts in the areas of information processing, telecommunications, electronic devices and services and software. Though centered in London, it will form a virtual research organization encompassing bases in Germany, France and other locations. In addition to pursuing its own research projects, Fujitsu Laboratories Europe will also engage in cooperative research activities with other European researchers, undertake joint research projects with leading-edge research facilities in Europe, make strategic and effective use of Europe's advanced research facilities and realize efficiencies by assigning specific research projects to European academic institutions. In addition, it will make joint research proposals, taking advantage of regional research funding programs to increase the scale and speed of research initiatives.
