Tokyo, October 2, 2000 --- Fujitsu Limited today introduced its new UL Series of phase locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizers (*1) for mobile communications devices (50MHz to 2.6GHz). Developed in cooperation with Kyushu Fujitsu Electronics Ltd., the UL Series comprises three models (MB15F72UL, MB25F73UL, MB15F78UL), with sales to commence today and volume shipment from November.
The PLL frequency synthesizer is an essential component of mobile terminals
such as cellular phones. It generates radio waves at the frequency needed by
the signal processor within the device. With worldwide cellular phone
shipments expected to reach 400 million units in fiscal 2000 and demand
increasing more and more for installed PLL synthesizers, the new UL Series
is a timely addition to Fujitsu's product lineup.
Adopting Fujitsu's advanced U-ESBIC4 (*2) BiCMOS process and newly
designed circuits, the UL Series boasts high speed and among the world's
lowest power consumption level. The MB15F78UL consumes only 4.5mA at
2.7 volts, or 20% less than the previous model (MB15F78SP). Moreover, by
designing new independent circuits, Fujitsu was able to reduce the lock-up
time (*3) by approximately 20%.
Each model in the UL Series optimizes the power consumption level for
mobile telephones with operating frequencies ranging from 50HZ to 2.6GHZ.
Use of the new thin package BCC(*4)-20 realizes a package 0.60 mm thinner
than before, reducing total area by 25%.
Fujitsu has been a global technology leader in PLL frequency synthesizers
and, according to the company's estimates, is the global market leader with a
share of about 40%. Fujitsu will continue to offer a variety of PLL
synthesizers for growing markets in wireless frequency band products and
Internet-related devices. The company has set a sales target of 8 million
units per month for the UL Series (all three models combined) following
commencement of volume shipping in November.
Product Highlights
- Supports wide range of operating frequencies to meet a variety of cellular
phone standards (PDC, GSM/DCS, W-CDMA and others)
- MB15F72UL (1.3 GHz/0.35 GHz, 2.5 mA)
- MB15F73UL (2.0GHz/0.6 GHz, 3.2 mA)
- MB15F78UL (2.6 GHz/1.2 GHz, 4.5mA)
- Extra low power consumption: 4.5 mA standard source (2.6 GHz band, Vcc =
2.7 V)
- Reduced lock-up time: 20% faster than previous models
- Guarantees low-power voltage operation; Vcc = 2.4V-3.6V

data transfer; +/-1.5 mA, +/- 6.0 mA
- High sensitivity fin inputs: Vfin (min)= -15dBm (500 ohm system)
- Interchangeable with the previous PLL (SP Series): comes with the same
pin layout
- Thin, Small package : TSSOP (*5)-20-pin and 0.60 mm ultra-thin package compatible with BCC 20-pin.
Terminology:
- PLL (Phase locked loop) Detects differences in the output frequency, the
input, and the frequency of the standard oscillator. It controls the feedback
circuit, and synchronizes the frequency of the oscillator.
- U-ESBIC (U-groove isolated emitter base self-aligned BiCMOS)4: Name of
the process which incorporates Fujitsu's BiCMOS technology to self-adjust
the emitter and the base. It has the advantages of both bipolar's high
frequency and the CMOS component's low-power consumption.
- Lock-up time: Preparation time needed to get the desired output
frequency.
- BCC (bump chip carrier): Ultra-small package developed for mobile devices.
The surface area of the package is 50% less than that of the SSOP (*6).
- TSSOP (Thin Shrink Small Outline L-Leaded Package): A type of package with 1.20 mm or less height.
- SSOP (Shrink Small Outline L-Leaded Package): A type of package with 1.25mm or less height.
