Tokyo: September 27, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited today will begin marketing two 32-megabit dual-operation flash memory devices, the MBM29PDS322TE and the MBM29PDS322BE, which can simultaneously perform read/write and
erase functions. Jointly developed with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) of the U.S., the devices have adopted a page-mode function that allows high speed read-out.
In recent years, the market for mobile phones has expanded rapidly, with a
total of 260 million units shipped worldwide by the end of March 2000. This
number is expected to reach 400 million by the end of next March. Mobile
phones have not only improved in terms of the quality of voice transmission
but have also have becoming more multi-functional, adding Internet
connectivity and the ability to process moving images. This has led, in turn,
to strong demand for flash memory that is faster and more energy efficient.
Fujitsu's new products address these needs. Operating on a 1.8Volt single
power supply, the new two products can help extend time between charges
for mobile phones, and their dual-operation function makes possible multi-
task operation such as simultaneous recording while talking. In addition,
their 45ns/page page-mode function facilitates high-speed read time for large-
volume data such as moving images distributed over the Internet.
The new devices also incorporate such additional features as Hi-ROM (*1),
which prevents illegal copying and an accelerator function enabling faster
write time at system load-in.
Sample shipment starts immediately at a unit price of 4,000 yen (TSOP *2),
while mass production is scheduled to begin this December. Combined sales
target for the two products is 1million units per month.
