FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2000
TOKYO, JAPAN - Fujitsu Limited, Lucent Technologies Japan Ltd. and NTT Communicationware Corporation(NTT Communicationware) today announced that they have jointly proposed and have been selected to supply an experimental, next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) core network system for NTT DoCoMo's use in its mobile communications development efforts. NTT DoCoMo will use the system in lab trials to evaluate an all-IP core network for use in mobile communications. The trials, which will begin in the fourth quarter of 2000, are part of NTT DoCoMo's continuing efforts to develop and deploy a next-generation broadband network to support an array of Internet-based and multimedia services.
"Centering on the efforts of Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., we have been aggressively pursuing research in this field," said Hiroaki Tekeichi, Fujitsu Limited group president, Network Systems Group and member of the board. "Taking advantage of our accomplishments to date, and in cooperation with Lucent and NTT Communicationware, we will make every effort to achieve breakthrough results for this verification experiment for NTT DoCoMo's next-generation all-IP mobile communications."
"We have been working hard to bring our extensive experience in advanced mobile technologies and internetworking systems to this collaboration with Fujitsu and NTT Communicationware on NTT DoCoMo's next-generation network systems for mobile communications," said Eiichi Shimizu, Representative Director and President of Lucent Technologies Japan Ltd. "This is a significant opportunity for Lucent to deepen its ties with one of the world's leading mobile service providers, as they begin their evaluation of IP core networks for delivery of mobile voice and data applications."
The joint development of this experimental system is the first project following last month's announcement that Fujitsu and Lucent would work together to pursue next- generation network deployment and buildouts in Japan and the Asia Pacific region. The relationship of Lucent and NTT Communicationware is based on their agreement , announced at Telecom '99 on October 11 last year, to jointly develop and market Lucent's high performance Softswitch for carriers in Japan.
The trial system includes network elements provided by Fujitsu and Lucent, including: Fujitsu's EA1000 IP router platform for IP core networks and mobile IP platform for managing voice and data mobility using IP technology, as well as Lucent's Softswitch -based call agent platform and Lucent's APX 8000 multiservice access switch. NTT Communicationware willl supply service applications on the platform.
