Tokyo - April 18, 2000 - Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Microelectronics,
Inc. (FMI) today introduced samples of the company's new 64 Megabit
Fast Cycle RAM (FCRAM[tm]) with Single Data Rate (SDR) SDRAM interface.
Designed for hand-held and consumer applications, the FCRAM features a
hidden precharge operation that enables zero-wait cycle at random
access operation. The new products feature 35ns of RAS access time and
39ns of RAS cycle time.
"Fujitsu expects that the FCRAM technology will make a significant
design contribution to a wide range of applications," said Fumio Baba,
vice president of FMI. "The FCRAM products introduced today provide
high-speed random-access capabilities by combining the FCRAM core with
the existing SDR SDRAM interface. This version is ideal for hand-held
and consumer applications where faster random cycle operation without
clock-speed changes are desirable. Future versions will expand our base
of applications."
FCRAM Family
The new FCRAM is the second in Fujitsu's family of Application Specific
Memories (ASM) based on the revolutionary FCRAM technology, Fujitsu's
next generation of high-speed memory technology. The 64 Megabit FCRAM
with Double Data Rate (DDR) interface was introduced last January for
graphics and multimedia applications.
Fujitsu's new series reflects the diversity of applications that can be
served using the high-speed, low-power FCRAM technology, which includes
memory array segmentation and internal pipelining that speed random
access and reduce power consumption.
Application Specific Memory Products Meet Multi-market Requirements
In recent years, the number of products that use DRAMs has increased
rapidly in market sectors such as computer products (PCs, workstations
and servers), consumer products (digital TVs, digital still cameras and
set-top boxes) and telecommunications and networking-related products
(switches and routers, cellular phones and PDAs). The various
applications require higher performance in different ways and more
diversified memory products.
Since conventional commodity DRAMs cannot satisfy the different
requirements of all these applications, the DRAM market is being
segmented based on applications and performance. Application Specific
Memory products are becoming essential, especially for the rapidly
evolving multimedia, networking and graphics systems. In many ways,
this trend is similar to the market shift that impacted logic devices
(ASICs).
Fujitsu is continuing to develop and supply high value-added ASM
products based on customer needs in different market segments. These
products will incorporate Fujitsu's FCRAM core technology, high-speed
interface technology and industry-leading small packaging technologies.
The company plans to further enhance the speed and capacity of these
initial FCRAM products, with additional versions due by the second half
of calendar year 2000.
