Tokyo, January 31, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited today announced the
establishment of the Fujitsu Linux Center, which is charged with
overseeing the activities of the company and its affiliates in
planning and introducing solutions incorporating Linux-based
computer systems. In a related development, Fujitsu introduced
a new model in its GRANPOWER 5000 Series of Intel Architecture
(IA) servers that is bundled with Linux-related services.
Linux systems have recently begun to make inroads in business
environments, as well as in research laboratories and educational
institutions. Linux also has become an important component in
system architecture for the rapidly growing Internet. In
response to these trends, Fujitsu's subsidiary PFU Limited has
been offering its customers in Japan basic Linux support services
since March 1999. Moreover, with its GRANPOWER 5000 Series,
Fujitsu was the first vendor in Japan to offer an operating
warranty for server platforms running on Linux.
The establishment of the Fujitsu Linux Center and new Linux-
bundled product introduction are evidence of the company's
continuing efforts to support customers who are Linux users.
Fujitsu Linux Center
Located at Fujitsu's Software Business Division in Shin-Yokohama
and with a staff of 20, the Fujitsu Linux Center will be
responsible for planning and development of a wide range of
Linux-based systems solutions. Intended to provide Linux-related
services and support at a level equivalent to that of other
existing OS systems, the Center will be engaged in the following
activities:
- Oversee hardware, software and service product offerings focusing
on Linux-based servers;
- Provide Linux-related product information on the Internet at
Fujitsu's GRANPOWER/OPEN WORLD website; http://www.fujitsu.co.jp/hypertext/granpower/ (Japanese)
- Select and evaluate ISV/IHV products needed for constructing
Linux systems
