Tokyo, January 24, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited today announced that,
together with Fujitsu Laboratories, Ltd., it has developed the
industry's fastest embedded graphics display controller. Called
"MB86290A", Fujitsu's new chip boasts very low power dissipation
and can dramatically improve the performance and quality of
graphics rendering in such embedded graphics applications as car
navigation systems, mobile communication terminals and home-use
graphics equipment. Fujitsu will start shipping samples of the
new chip immediately.
The car navigation system market is growing rapidly in Japan,
thanks to added convenience provided by the VICS*1 traffic
information system and sophisticated speech synthesis/recognition
technology, developments that are expected to be central elements
in the realization of the ITS (Intelligent Transportation System),
currently being developed. The volume of car navigation systems
shipped in Japan is expected to rise from 1.4 million units in 1998
to over 2 million units this year. Moreover, with the increasing
use of such new media as DVD and new information service systems
utilizing personal cellular phones, the graphics controller devices
in car navigation systems are being required to deliver more
sophisticated and complexed visual image rendering performance and
functionality in real time.
Responding to these market trends and building on technology it
developed for graphics LSIs for arcade games and PCs, Fujitsu's
new MB86290A graphics display controller LSI delivers the
industry's fastest embedded graphics controller rendering
performance.
Providing added convenience and enhanced quality for car navigation
system graphics, the MB86290A supports several optimized functions,
such as smooth line drawing for low-resolution LCD displays,
concave polygon drawing for random shapes with multiple vertices,
and six layers of overlay display with programmable transparent
effect. Also, as the world first graphics display controller for
embedded use, the MB86290A contains real 3D graphics acceleration
capability, including gouraud/flat shading, bi-linear texture
mapping with automatic perspective correction, pixel based alpha
blending and Z buffering.
The MB86290A can be used with various kinds of embedded RISC CPUs
without external glue logic. To accommodate the severe temperature
conditions and operation environment of automotive equipment, the
chip boasts low power dissipation of less than 1W.
To support customers' application system designs, Fujitsu is
providing an evaluation and software development kit comprising an
evaluation board, graphics driver software and sample application
programs. The board can be used either with a conventional PCI slot
of a Windows NT PC or with embedded RISC CPU boards. A graphics
driver for Windows CE will also be supported.
Through the MB86290A and successive products, Fujitsu aims to
acquire more than 60% of the car navigation graphics display
controller market by the year of 2002. In addition, anticipating
new trends and requirements for media devices in the digital AV
system market, Fujitsu will expand its product line up, including
on-chip SDRAMs, on-chip geometry processors and an integrated
framework with video/audio decoder for multimedia operation.
