Fujitsu Extends the Mid-range Appeal of its PRIMEPOWER Servers

- New systems match growth requirements for
dedicated net application engines -

PRIMEPOWER 650 Tokyo, November 7, 2001---Fujitsu Limited announced today two new models that extend the mid-range capability of its powerful SPARC(R)/ Solaris(R)-based PRIMEPOWER server lineup. Aimed at meeting the growth requirements of mid-sized businesses and dedicated application servers, these new 8-way workgroup servers and 16-way mid-range class servers come in flexible rack-mount formats.

The new PRIMEPOWER 650 and 850 models employ the latest 675MHz SPARC64TM GP processors, developed by Fujitsu, with large 8MB cache, top-line branch prediction algorithms and improved inter-processor and processor-memory bandwidth. They use "Source Sync" system bus technology, whereby data packets are transferred synchronously, to transfer information at up to 41.5GB per second (PRIMEPOWER 850) or 13.8GB per second (PRIMEPOWER 650). Overall, these technological improvements mean up to 40% improvement in online transaction performance compared with existing models with same number of processors.

With dual power feed options previously found only on top-end PRIMEPOWER data center servers, the new models also provide improved availability as well as the added headroom needed by organizations with growing Internet services, CRM, ERP, email, and other business applications. The newly extended PRIMEPOWER server range now allows customers to choose using powerful specific process servers in 1 to 16 processor configurations or to opt for server consolidation (using partitions) with high-end 4 to 128 processor servers.

"It is our mission to continually strive for better server efficiency for our customers" said Mr. Takashi Aoki, Group President of Fujitsu's Computer Systems Group. "Fujitsu's long proven expertise in our mainframe and high-end Solaris based servers is now being applied to mid-range class systems. These new servers are suitable both for business critical computing and as high performance application engines."

The PRIMEPOWER range comprises two basic model ranges. The first is the PRIMEPOWER 1/200/400/600 range of stand-alone and rack-mounted servers. This has been extended with the introduction of PRIMEPOWER 650 and 850. These dedicated servers now provide the best in scalability and price performance from 1 to 16 processor systems. The PRIMEPOWER 800/100/2000 range of systems scale from 4 to 128 processors and offer partitioning and internal clustering solutions for the needs of server consolidation. As a result PRIMEPOWER offers an extremely flexible set of configuration solutions for in-office, inter-office and data center-based server installations.
