Fujitsu and Intel Collaborate to Expand Intel-Based Server and Workstation Offerings in High-End Platforms Segment

-- Establish Fujitsu IA Solution Center --

TOKYO, December 14, 2000 - Fujitsu Limited and Intel Corporation today announced an agreement to work closely together to advance penetration of Intel(r) Architecture in the high-end server and workstation market.

Fujitsu and Intel have a longstanding strong relationship involving the development of Intel-based servers and workstations, and they share the view that it will be very important in the future to provide customers with higher performance, highly reliable Intel-based business solutions.

Agenda of the agreement

  1. Establishment of Fujitsu IA Solution Center
Fujitsu will next March establish a solution center in Tokyo to help customers develop Intel-based systems leveraging both companies' joint solutions expertise. The two companies will focus on providing consulting services and validation for Intel-based systems development. In its first fiscal year the center is expected to employ a staff of 100.

The solution center will initially concentrate on IA-32 systems, though eventually both companies plan to collaborate on Itanium(tm) processor-based systems and solutions as well. The companies will also engage in joint sales and marketing activities through an intensive exchange of case study information generated from their experience in other solution centers.

The Fujitsu IA Solution Center will offer the following capabilities and services:

    • The latest optimized Intel-based Fujitsu solutions targeting the Internet and the enterprise.
    • Sales consultation services and support to develop customer-optimized systems.
    • Pre-validation support for customers to ensure smooth systems development

  2. Joint development of enterprise systems based on Intel's IA-64 architecture.
Fujitsu will join the Itanium(tm) pilot program, working closely with Intel to develop workstations and servers based on Intel's Itanium processors. The program allows customers to test the operations of their Itanium architecture systems. Additionally, Fujitsu is developing highly scalable, 32-way systems based on Intel's next-generation of Itanium(tm) processors. Scalability will be achieved by optimizing Fujitsu's proprietary technology, including its super-fast interconnects (Synfinity(tm)), for the latest Intel-based processors and chipsets. Fujitsu expects the systems to be among the most scalable in the industry, providing superior RAS and delivering great performance at an outstanding price.
Fujitsu and Intel will provide platforms based on the same chipset architecture and cooperate with operating system vendors, software vendors, and firmware vendors to deliver powerful enterprise solutions for the Internet.

Although initially focusing on the Japanese market, the Fujitsu IA Solution Center and Fujitsu's participation in the Intel Itanium Processor Pilot Program will contribute to the company's ability to provide Intel-based Internet platform solutions worldwide. In cooperation with Intel, Fujitsu intends to extend its IA solution center activity outside Japan in the future.
