Fujitsu and Quantum Agree to Cross-license Disk Drive Patents

-- Mutual access to patent portfolios will provide freedom in technology and product development for two of the world's leading hard disk manufacturers --

Tokyo, October 8, 1999---Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has signed a cross-licensing agreement with Quantum Corporation of the U.S. covering existing and future disk drive patents. The agreement gives both companies mutual access to a wide range of each other's extensive patent portfolios relating to disk drive technologies. It covers magnetic hard disk drives, including portable, cartridge and fixed disk drives, as well as the components related to these products.

The cross-licensing agreement provides both companies with increased worldwide freedom to develop new products incorporating the latest disk drive technologies. Mutual access to their respective patents will allow Fujitsu and Quantum to promote technical advancements in the computer storage product industry, and enable both companies to better meet ever-changing customer requirements by quickly delivering new products and services worldwide. As two of the world's leading manufacturers of magnetic disk drives, Fujitsu and Quantum together account for approximately a third of worldwide hard disk drive production.

"Fujitsu is pleased to have concluded this cross-licensing agreement with Quantum," said Isao Sanaka, Group President of Fujitsu's Storage Products Group. "We believe that it will promote healthy competition in all areas of development, manufacture and sale of magnetic hard disk drive products."
