The partnership's initial vertical market penetration will be in the healthcare industry. Mobile, pen-based computers such as Fujitsu-ICL's TeamPad 7600 stand to augment or even replace the traditional paper-based system of patient and practice information management.
"Healthcare is but one of the industries perfectly suited to the TeamPad 7600," said Ron Omohundro, senior vice president of Fujitsu-ICL's Global Products Group. "We are also currently partnering with established companies in various vertical markets including transportation and route accounting. We want to be known as the premier provider of ruggedized mobile computing systems in the roaming worker market."
"This technology combination meets a growing need in the healthcare market," said Art Gutch, president of RDC Networks. "The lightweight, durable TeamPad 7600 is exactly what healthcare workers are looking for in a computer. And by integrating our superior wireless LAN technology into the TeamPad 7600, Fujitsu and RDC are giving users complete mobility with seamless connectivity to enterprise servers. Simply put, these two technologies yields one intelligent information solution," he said.
"Each and every day, patients bet their lives that their healthcare providers will be accurate, knowledgeable and organized. There is not another industry with stakes as high," said Dr. Richard S. Dick, CEO of ASCENTechnologies, a consultancy focused on healthcare and advanced information technologies. "Handing healthcare providers mobile computers is like putting a medical library and detailed patient records in the palms of their hands. When someone is charged with making such critical decisions on a daily basis, there is no such thing as too much information."
"Powerful, lightweight wireless computers made possible by the combination of Fujitsu and RDC technologies give physicians and nurses timely access to much of the needed clinical information resources," Dick continued. "The result: consistently higher quality of care for patients."
In the partnership, the TeamPad 7600 is augmented by RDC Networks' PortLANTM wireless LAN PC card with integrated antenna technology. This solution provides 2 to 3 times the coverage area of other wireless products, requiring fewer access points, fewer hubs and less cabling.
The revolutionary TeamPad 7600 offers a unique slate design and large color screen. The 7600 networks easily and seamlessly with RDC's robust and reliable frequency-hopping technology. A high-speed infrared port, one Type II and one III PCMCIA slot, and one compact PCMCIA slot, and numerous options such as an integrated keyboard and scanner make the 7600 fully adaptable to any environment. For stationary use, the TeamPad 7600's optional Expansion Station, with a keyboard, mouse and additional drives and ports, turns the 7600 into a full-fledged desktop computer.
