SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 21, 1997 - Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. (FPSI) today introduced the Stylistic 1200, the first commercially available pen tablet to run Windows NT. Designed specifically to meet the computing needs of the mobile workforce, the new Stylistic 1200 delivers Pentium(R) performance, gigabyte capacity and universal connectivity. These industry-leading capabilities, combined with the Stylistic 1200's ability to run Windows NT Workstation 4.0, give Fujitsu's new pen tablet broad applicability with large corporations or government agencies using IT to streamline business processes, increase productivity, reduce costs and improve competitiveness.

Once again we're leading the effort to deliver decision support in the palm of the hand, wherever and whenever it's needed," noted Geoff Walker, marketing vice president of Fujitsu Personal Systems. The Stylistic 1200's outstanding capabilities will be well appreciated by IT managers striving to bring working mobility to their workforces, while its laptop-class performance and compatibility meet the high standards of the corporate enterprise. We expect this new system, along with our announcement of the new Point 510(TM), to help continue our rapid growth and broad appeal across a range of markets."

Market Applications

As with the Company's other pen tablets, the new Stylistic 1200 is ideally suited to providing decision support computing for employees in any industry where mobility is paramount, including sales force automation, insurance, healthcare, utilities, market survey and others. Companies currently using FPSI's handheld tablets include American General Life & Accident, Bacardi-Martini, G.D. Searle, Gillette, ITT Hartford, Southwest Airlines and Southern California Edison, to name a few.

The Stylistic 1200's unique ability to run Windows NT offers a number of critical benefits for these types of enterprises. First and foremost, it allows companies to standardize on Windows NT throughout the enterprise - even down to the handheld computer level - allowing 32-bit, mission-critical applications to be used in the furthest reaches of the enterprise. Windows NT also offers superior stability, security and administration capabilities, giving it a lower cost-of-ownership for enterprise applications. Windows NT, as supplied with the Stylistic 1200, not only fully enables the pen (including handwriting recognition), but also includes power management support and enhanced PC Card compatibility. This unusual combination of usability and portability will solidify the position of Stylistic 1200 pen tablets in the enterprise computing market. For enterprises that aren't quite ready to move to Windows NT, the Stylistic 1200 is also available with Windows 95(R) or Windows for Workgroups 3.11.

Stylistic 1200 Specifics

Delivering the fastest, smallest and lightest Windows-compatible PCs in the world has helped FPSI to capture more than 60% of the pen tablet market - and the Stylistic 1200 continues this tradition. It's the first broadly applicable pen tablet to come with a Pentium processor (120 MHz), as well as the first to include Universal Serial Bus (USB), a 128-bit video controller and Zoomed Video. The Stylistic 1200's lithium-ion battery offers the longest battery life in its class - up to four hours.

The Stylistic 1200's unprecedented, shock-mounted 1.4 GB hard drive will enable customers to keep up with the growing size of their remote database applications. Moreover, this increased storage capacity makes the new tablet ideal where data capacity is an issue, such as in insurance claims adjusting, multimedia merchandising or GIS applications. An optional 2.1 GB hard drive is available to meet even more demanding requirements. The Stylistic 1200 also offers a base of 16 MB of EDO RAM memory, expandable up to 48 MB total.

The Stylistic 1200 is the first pen tablet to support all four of the LCD industry's display technologies. New with the Stylistic 1200 is a rich TFT color display, offering more than 256,000 colors and a wider viewing angle, making it easier to share information with co-workers or clients. DSTN color and transmissive or transflective monochrome screens are also available, giving the tablet a display to match a variety of indoor or outdoor lighting conditions.

The Stylistic 1200 also includes most methods of connectivity available, including IrDA, two full RS-232 serial ports, a monitor port, a parallel port, a Sound Blaster-compatible audio system (incorporating an internal microphone and speaker, as well as four input/output jacks), a keyboard port, a mouse port, two USB ports, a floppy port and a replicator port. Two Type II/one Type III PC Card 3.0 (CardBus) slots are offered.

Furthermore, the Stylistic 1200 supports a broad range of LAN and WAN radios, any of which can easily be slipped into one of the two PC Card slots. The Stylistic 1200 is "Radio-Ready(TM)," meaning that it has been designed to provide an optimum environment for the use of PC Card WAN radios. This "Radio-Ready" capability ensures both that the customer's chosen radio will not interfere with the operation of the computer in any way, and that the computer will not interfere with the radio (thus increasing radio range by allowing reception of weaker signals).

Pricing and Availability

Configured with a mono display, 16 MB of RAM, 1.4 GB of storage and Windows 95, the Stylistic 1200's expected volume price is $3,500 (the price that an end-user corporation typically pays in volume). Configured with a TFT color display, the Stylistic 1200's expected volume price is $4,730.

The Stylistic 1200 is available through over 300 VARs and systems integrators worldwide. First customer shipment will be during July 1997.
