Fujitsu and PFU Introduce GRANPOWER 7000 Series UNIX Servers
- 64 bit UltraSPARC processor & world's fastest cross-bar switch
achieves high-performance, reliability & fastest transactions -
Tokyo (January 29, 1997) --- Fujitsu Limited and PFU Limited today launched the new GRANPOWER 7000 series of UNIX servers. The new 7000 Series features the advanced 64 bit UltraSPARC processor and the world's fastest cross-bar switch to system bus. With a transfer speed
of 5.2 GB/S, the GRANPOWER 7000 Series achieves industry leading transaction processing performance for UNIX servers.
The new GRANPOWER 7000 Series comprises three models:
- GRANPOWER 7000 Model 600, configurable with as many as eight 250 MHz UltraSPARC processors;
- GRANPOWER 7000 Model 200, configurable with up to two 250 MHz or 167 MHz UltraSPARC processors; and
- GRANPOWER 7000 Model 50, a competitively priced 32 bit server configuarable with up to two 150 MHz hyperSPARC processors.
Designed for mission critical applications in large enterprises, such as major corporations and public institutions, the GRANPOWER 7000 Series provides not only high performance but excellent reliability, durability and ease of use.
The new series is fully compatible with Fujitsu's popular DS/90 7000 Series of UNIX servers. The UXP/DS operating system software has been enhanced to accommodate 64 bit performance and file systems. In addition, Fujitsu plans to offer a full 64 bit version of UXP/DS during the first half of 1998
for use with the new GRANPOWER 7000 Series Models 600 and 200.
Industry Leading Transaction Processing Performance
In addition to using the powerful UltraSPARC processor, the GRANPOWER 7000 Series incorporates a number of innovative technologies to realize high performance. As a result, the Model 200 with two CPUs achieves a transaction processing capacity of 4,718.73 transactions per minute (tpmC), while the 8-processor Model 600 achieves performance levels 3.2 times greater than the Model 200 (based on Fujitsu's calculations).
Advanced technologies include:
- 64 bit RISC processors (UltraSPARC/250 MHz, 1MB cache)
- World's fastest cross-bar switch to system bus (transfer speed of 5.2 GB/S) makes possible simultaneous operation of multiple processors, I/O bus and memory access
- Improved system performance includes faster I/O processing (twice as fast as previous models), a key factor for OLTP
High Reliability
The GRANPOWER 7000 Series offers mission-critical reliability.
- Improved system dependability with fewer breakdowns
- Dual magnetic disk drives enable enlarged composition of on/off switch and cooling fan
- Replacement of magnetic disk drives, internal tape drive, on/off switch, cooling fan can be carried out without disrupting operations
- Identifies and separates faulty parts in processor, memory and I/O bus
- Easy System Recovery
- With standard SCF (System Control Facility), independent processor automatically identifies any hardware irregularity and initiates auto logging and alert
- By making the process of checking files faster at the time of system breakdown, rebooting time is shortened.
- High system availability for cluster systems
- By connecting up to 8 servers in a LAN, any one of the servers can take over should one of servers fail (this feature not available for Model 50)
- The "HA Entry System" features a pre-installed hardware/software bundle for creating a cluster system with the 2-processor version of the Model 200
Enhanced Software Boosts Performance
- With its 64 bit file system, UXP/DX can handle 1 terabyte files
- UXP/DS 64 bit logic space will be available in the third quarter 1997 to provide advanced database functionality, while the full 64 bit version of the software with application development and execution environment will be available in the first half of 1998.
- As for database applications, Oracle's 64 bit version will be available in the third quarter of 1997, while the 64 bit version of SymfoWARE Server will be available in the first quarter of 1998.
