SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 12, 1996 -- Fujitsu Computer Products of America, the market leader in 3.5-inch magneto-optical (MO) drives, today expanded its DynaMO(R) family to include an external 640MB drive for the PC market and the world's first 230MB Enhanced-IDE internal MO drive. In addition to providing the largest 3.5" MO storage capacity available, the new DynaMO 640 PC drive offers the highest MO performance and durability on the market, increasing write transfer rates up to 33 percent over previous DynaMO products.
The expanded capacity and performance of the DynaMO 640 allows power users a fail-safe way to backup, transport and transfer mission-critical data. At CD-ROM capacities and near-hard drive speeds, the DynaMO 640 can store and run large data and graphics files, complex applications, as well as operating systems that are bootable from the DynaMO media. The new drive is ideal for desktop publishing, color publishing, government, sales, portable PC and general business users who work with multimedia, imaging, CAD/CAM, complex spreadsheet and database, Internet authoring and whole-system backup applications.
"The advantages of the DynaMO 640 are obvious compared with other removable storage technologies," said Ken Oberman, senior director of the optical products group at Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "It has the capacity of a CD-ROM yet is infinitely rewritable. Access speeds approach hard drive performance. At an average of six cents-per-megabyte, it has the lowest media cost. Additionally, the media is virtually indestructible with an unparalleled data lifetime estimated at 30 years and its standard technology provides usability with previous and future generation products."
Prior to Fujitsu's debut of a 3.5-inch MO drive using OverWrite technology in August, MO drive performance was limited to a three-pass writing process; one to erase existing data, a second to write new information, and a third pass to verify the data. Fujitsu eliminated the erase pass from the process by using OverWrite technology, boosting write transfer rates enough to run complex applications and speed up backup operations.
The DynaMO 640 supports both OverWrite and standard 640MB and 540MB MO disks. Unlike non-standardized removable technologies, it is read and write compatible with 230MB and first-generation 128MB MO disks, protecting user investment in previous generations of MO media and compatibility with future MO drives.
The Fujitsu DynaMO 230 Internal IDE Kit provides all the necessary hardware, drivers and instructions so desktop PC users can take full advantage of E-IDE's plug-and-play easy installation. Previously, internal MO drives were only available with SCSI interfaces that require adapter card installation and configuration. The DynaMO 230 Internal IDE Kit's 230MB MO drive is also the industry's smallest at 17mm and provides rugged shock protection.
Fujitsu will be including the new release of DataSaver Personal Backup(TM) utility by Software Architects, Inc. with the DynaMO 640 and the DynaMO 230 Internal IDE Kit. DataSaver is designed to back up data utilizing an intuitive, easy-to-use interface. DataSaver*s "Auto-estimator" tells users how many disks a backup will require, approximately how long the backup will take, and how much time is needed to swap disks. DataSaver also allows users pre-set backup preferences making subsequent backups a one-button procedure.

The DynaMO 640 PC will be available in December with a list price of $659. Fujitsu is currently shipping a DynaMO 640 for the Macintosh market and an internal, bare drive (the M2513A) version of the DynaMO 640 to OEMs. The DynaMO 230 IDE Internal Kit is available now with a list price of $375.
