WebTV NETWORKS AND FUJITSU ANNOUNCE JOINT VENTURE TO BRING TELEVISION INTERNET ACCESS TO JAPAN

TOKYO, Japan (December 17, 1996) --WebTV Networks Inc. and Fujitsu Limited today announced an agreement in principle to form a joint venture company to establish a television-based Internet service in Japan, using the innovative technology developed by WebTV Networks. Fujitsu will build a network operations center for and provide Internet access and various online content to the subcription-based WebTV NetworksSM service in Japan.

The WebTV Network service, launched in September of this year in the United States, is the first online service that brings high-quality and high-performance Internet access to televisions at a small fraction of the cost of a personal computer. The WebTVTM set-top boxes, available at consumer electronics stores in the U.S., are designed to make the Internet simple to use, with a set-up time of 15 minutes that allows One-Thumb BrowsingTM of the Internet using a television remote control.

"We are very pleased with WebTV's compelling technology and consumer-oriented approach to Internet access," Naoyuki Akikusa, Executive Vice President of Fujitsu Limited. "And we are happy to have selected WebTV as our strategic partner in bringing the Internet to the Japanese televisions. We expect that the combination of Fujitsu's experiences with Internet access and with NIFTY-Serve, the largest consumer online service in Japan, will contribute to making WebTV enormously successful in the Japanese market. "

WebTV Networks will own 65 percent of the WebTV/Fujitsu joint venture company and Fujitsu Limited will own 35 percent. WebTV Networks and Fujitsu will form alliances with companies in various fields, including consumer electronics, Internet access, media and content to establish the new service.

"This agreement between our two companies will bring Japanese consumers the compelling TV Internet experience, currently available in homes across the United States," said Steve Perlman, Co-founder, President and CEO of WebTV Networks Inc. "Fujitsu's leadership in consumer online services and Internet-related industries in Japan will help provide WebTV customers with the best and most cost-effective way to connect their TVs to the World Wide Web. "

Fujitsu will build a network operation center to host network services such as Internet access, e-mail, billing and customer support for the WebTV Japanese network. Fujitsu will be one of the providers of access points in Japan for the network with its InfoWebTM infrastructure, as well as a provider of content, including InterTVTM television listing service, the WildBirdTM map-based information service and teleparc, an online magazine. The joint venture will be Fujitsu's exclusive branded service offering for Internet applications on television.

Partners providing hardware for the new WebTV Japanese network will be announced early next year.
