Fujitsu Develops Ultra-Thin, 90-inch LCD Multi-Panel Display

Tokyo, September 13, 1995 --- Fujitsu Limited has achieved a major breakthrough in large-screen display technology with the successful development of an ultra-thin, large-screen multipanel liquid crystal display. The prototype Fujitsu multipanel display boasts a 227cm-diagonal (90-inch) seamless screen which is only 28cm thick.
The prototype system will be exhibited at the upcoming Telecom '95, which begins October 3 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Various large-screen display systems using projection technology and multiple cubes have been commercially introduced in recent years.
Most of these, however, have been burdened with bulky screens ranging from 70cm to a few meters in thickness, thereby limiting their practical use and ease of installation.
The new Fujitsu system is intended overcome this drawback and satisfy growing demand for thin, large-screen displays that can be installed even on walls.

Current LCD panels have a frame surrounding their picture area which, when configured in a multipanel display, form a grid-like pattern and divide the picture on the screen.
In order to hide this grid pattern, the new Fujitsu system magnifies each image to be larger than its frame size and then projects them on a common screen so that the magnified images are arranged tightly.
Specially developed control equipment processes the LCD picture signal from the input source and distributes it to the LCD panels, modulating each distributed picture signal and adjusting the luminescence and color of each panel.
And to overcome the limitations of conventional inverted-imaging methods, which require unwieldy projection distances, Fujitsu developed an innovative new dual-lens, short-distance imaging method and directional light source.
This technology was originally demonstrated at the Electronic Display Expo in April 1994, using an experimental 4-unit multipanel display.

An advanced application of this earlier technology, the new 90-inch multipanel prototype display consists of a 6 x 8-row configuration of 26cm-diagonal (10.4-inch) LCD display panels.
The number of panels is not limited to forty-eight and can be configured to accommodate customized screen sizes.
In addition to its extraordinarily thin profile -- just 28cm -- the system offers high-resolution display of 4960 x 2790 pixels.

With these advantages, the new multipanel LCD display can be applied to a variety of large-screen needs such as CAD display and high-definition television display terminals.
In the future, it is also expected to be used as a wall-mounted display unit for a variety of business and residential uses.
