Fujitsu Introduces New Line of High-Performance 32-bit RISC Microcontrollers with CAN Interface for Automotive Meter Control

- Ten-fold Increase in Performance -

Tokyo, May 16, 2002--Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has jointly developed with Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe a new group of offerings in its FR Series of microcontrollers featuring the company' s 32-bit RISC core and built-in Controller Area Network (CAN) interface for optimizing high-speed real-time control in automotive metering systems. The MB91360G Series, which will be commercially available beginning today, includes six models suited to varied requirements for packaging and functionality.

Fujitsu' s new series is the first to use a 32-bit RISC core in a CAN microcontroller for automotive meter control, offering performance about 10 times faster than that of its existing products.

As the communications functions in onboard automotive microcontrollers have grown faster, there has been a shift from 16-bit to 32-bit architectures. At the same time, there is growing need to shorten development time for large-scale embedded programs.

MB91360G Series highlights:
  • Utilizes Fujitsu' s high-performance RISC core, capable of 32 MIPS at 25 MHz. Achieves over ten times the performance of Fujitsu' s earlier CISC-based microcontroller (3 MIPS).

  • Built-in system control instructions (bit-control instructions, I/O access instructions) and C compiler instructions allow compact program size equivalent to that of 16-bit microcontrollers. Helps speed development time for large-scale programming.

  • Has 512 KB flash memory to enable embedding of large applications.
Sample Price (in Japan): 3,000 yen (all six models)
Shipping Date: End of May 2002 (all six)
Sales Target: 200,000 units/month (aggregate for all six)

Leveraging its leading-edge system-LSI and embedded flash memory technologies, Fujitsu will continue to enhance its offerings of high-performance microcontrollers for automotive meter control with products that have smaller surface area and fewer parts.
