Fujitsu Introduces Space-saving PRIMERGY Blade Server
for Corporate Data Centers and Internet Service Providers
Tokyo, March 14, 2002 -- Fujitsu Limited today announced the addition
of a new space-saving blade server to its Intel®-based PRIMERGY
server family. Co-developed with European affiliate Fujitsu Siemens
Computers, which will handle sales in EMEA, Fujitsu's new blade server
will be available in Japan, North America, Asia-Pacific and EMEA in
Q2 2002.
Comprising a complete server unit with one or two processors, main
memory, hard disks and LAN interfaces in the form of a single plug-in
card (blade), the PRIMERGY blade server has room for up to 20 of these
server blades. It occupies only 3 height units (3U) overall, enabling
up to 260 servers with as many as 520 processors to be installed in a
single industry-standard 40U 19-inch rack. At the same time, energy-
saving processors ensure low power consumption. With this new
generation of ultra-compact, energy-saving and highly scalable
systems, the running costs of large server farms for web and terminal
services in data centers can be dramatically reduced.
The innovative architecture of the PRIMERGY blade server has been
optimized to solve the problems of large server farms by reducing
space requirements and power consumption, as well as simplifying
maintenance. Unlike servers in a computer network, each of which
brings its own infrastructure (power supply units, fans etc.), the
PRIMERGY blade server offers this infrastructure for up to 20 system
nodes simultaneously.
Despite the highly compact design, each blade contains one or two
processors, two main memory banks, up to two hard disks on an on-board
RAID-1 controller, and two gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Each server
rack thus offers space saving of seven times the height required with
conventional servers; plus, with comparable performance, the new design
saves five times the energy used by traditional servers. Thanks to the
PRIMERGY blade server's internal LAN connection structure and shared
power supply, cabling is reduced to a third, making maintenance much
easier. New concepts for remote management reduce installation and
service overhead, and the central distribution of operating system
software to the individual blades cuts installation times dramatically.
As an economical and ultra-compact server system, the PRIMERGY blade
server optimally satisfies the demands of corporate data centers and
Internet Service Providers, and it is ideally suited to web or caching
services as well as communication, front-end applications and Linux
scalability clusters. "We're convinced that our new PRIMERGY blade
server is the right system for our customers at a time when the blade
server market is poised for tremendous growth," said Jitsuo Masuda,
General Manager of the IA Server Division, Fujitsu Limited. "Analysts
are predicting rapid growth in blade server unit sales and turnover
through 2006, and with our PRIMERGY blade server offering, we are
superbly equipped to meet this demand."
[Outstanding Key Features of New PRIMERGY Mono- and Dual-processor
Blade Servers]
The latest, energy-saving Intel processors (Pentium® III M), up to
512 KB second-level cache, two hard disks in the RAID network and two
integrated gigabit-LAN channels per server blade guarantee high
throughput and high system performance. Computing power can be
increased as necessary without changing the existing infrastructure,
simply by adding CPU blades. Thanks to the supplied remote management
and deployment software, the entire installation and administration
can be handled via LAN - CD-ROM and floppy drives are no longer needed.
If necessary, I/O devices can also be connected locally via two USB
ports or a VGA port. The operating system and the application
software can be installed automatically via a central management
station. LEDs on the front and back display status information. With
their modular construction, PRIMERGY blade servers are highly flexible,
scalable, service-friendly and high-availability.
