Fujitsu Introduces World's First MCP with Built-in MPEG-2 Encoder, FCRAM and PCI Interface
|
Tokyo, November 20, 2001---
Fujitsu Limited announced today that it has collaborated with Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. to develop a new, stacked multi-chip package (MCP), model MB86393, which includes a PCI*1 interface, MPEG-2*2 video/audio encoder, and 64-Mbit FCRAM*3 in a single package. The new product goes on sale starting today.
The shift in recent years to digital AV appliances has led to the development of various devices that employ MPEG-2 technology for compressing and decompressing high-quality audio and video signals, including PCs with multimedia capabilities, DVD players and digital broadcast receivers. In addition to the ability to play back compressed MPEG-2 signals, these devices are now beginning to be equipped to record information digitally, as well. The development of this market has led to a demand for MPEG-2 encoder chips that digitally compress audio and video signals.
Fujitsu's new product includes an MPEG-2 video/audio encoder and 64-Mbit FCRAM in a single, compact (16 x 16 mm) 288-pin FLGA*4 package. The package has its own onboard memory and requires no connection to external memory, since video and audio signals can be converted into compressed signals that conform to a MPEG-2 system format. Moreover, because the MPEG-2 encoder chip includes a PCI interface, there is no need for a separate controller.

Terminology
- *1 PCI (peripheral component interconnect bus)
- Standard bus for connecting internal parts of personal computers and other devices.
- *2 MPEG-2 (motion picture expert group)
- International standard for video and audio data compression. Used in DVD players, digital TV broadcast-satellite transmissions, etc.
- *3 FCRAM (fast-cycle RAM)
- Proprietary Fujitsu technology for next-generation memory cores. Permits faster access with lower power consumption than conventional DRAM.
- *4 FLGA (fine-pitch land-grid array)
- Chip packaging that uses bumps or lands of less than 100 µm height for pins, spaced less than 0.8 mm apart.
