Fujitsu Introduces World's First 2.3 Gigabyte
GIGAMO Drive with SCSI Interface
|
Tokyo, October 9, 2001---Fujitsu Limited today announced the
introduction of its new GIGAMO Drive(*), a 3.5" magneto-optical (MO)
disk drive with 2.3 gigabytes of memory capacity and a SCSI interface.
The new disk drive is being distributed through Fujitsu CoWorCo Ltd.
in Japan and through Fujitsu's sales network overseas.
With the advent of the broadband Internet era, companies have to
handle increasing amounts of digital information, and MO disk drives
have been widely used in medical devices, telephone switching systems,
financial systems, surveillance cameras, and other commercial
applications that require a high degree of reliability. In particular,
MO disk drives with SCSI interfaces have a long and well-established
track record.
Following upon the 2.3GB GIGAMO drive with ATAPI interface it introduced
in July, Fujitsu's new MO disk drive makes an SCSI interface available
to users who require a high degree of reliability. With its superior
capacity and speed, the new GIGAMO drive is the optimal high-capacity,
removable memory drive, and Fujitsu aims to promote its wide adoption,
particularly among overseas customers in using communications equipment
and financial information systems.
- OEM Sample Price

- Sales Target: 500,000 units in the first three years
FEATURES OF THE MCJ3230SS
- SCSI compatible
Uses SCSI-2 (Fast-20) interface, enabling high-speed and stable data
transmission. This allows the MO disk device to be connected to a
personal computer or a dedicated device for data transmission of up
to 20MB per second.
- World's Fastest Data Transmission Speed
Allows data transmission speeds up to 8.38MB per second when used
with a 2.3GB medium. With a 1.3GB medium, it uses the ZCLV method
to allow high-speed recording by optimizing the disk rotation in
accordance with the head position. It is possible, for example, to
record 8MB per second of high-resolution MPEG2 data directly onto
the GIGAMO medium.
- 2.3GB capacity
World's first SCSI interface MO disk drive that provides 2.3GB of
capacity. This is equivalent to 17 times the capacity of the first
generation 128MB drives.
- Compatible with Media ID Functions for copyright protection.
Like the USB 2.0-compatible GIGAMO drive introduced on October 1,
it has media ID functions that protect copyrights of digital content.
These functions are expected to be used in a broad range of
applications, such as digital document management for businesses.
- Maintains Compatibility with Previous Media
Backward compatible with 128MB, 230MB, 540MB, 640MB and 1.3GB media.
Terminology:
- * GIGAMO Drive:
- A disk drive with over 1GB of capacity that uses the high-capacity
3.5" MO format standard developed jointly by Fujitsu and Sony.
Standards have been set at 1.3GB and 2.3GB.
