Fujitsu Extends PRIMEPOWER's Performance Leadership

- New 675MHz/600MHz SPARC64(TM) GP processors give further 20% processor
speed boost to industry's fastest servers in the UNIX market -

PRIMEPOWER2000 Tokyo, October 9, 2001--- Building on a recent dramatic TPC performance benchmark in which its PRIMEPOWER Solaris-based servers doubled the non-clustered performance of the closest competitor(1), Fujitsu Limited announced today that it is increasing the clock speed of its up to 128-way enterprise class PRIMEPOWER servers by a further 20 percent. To continue its record of providing the most powerful and reliable systems for business-critical computing and Internet deployment, Fujitsu's high-end PRIMEPOWER servers are being upgraded from 563 MHz to 675 MHz SPARC64(TM) processors, and mid-range PRIMEPOWER servers will likewise be upgraded from 500 MHz to 600MHz. In addition, Fujitsu is adding a wide range of new capabilities and enhancements that extend its technology leadership as the best commercial server choice for the enterprise and the emerging broadband Internet.

"In the emerging broadband Internet market with its 24 x 7 demands, customers require even higher system availability than that achieved on legacy mainframes," said Mr. Takashi Aoki, Group President of Fujitsu's Computer Systems Group. "Fujitsu's long proven expertise in mainframe high availability is now being applied to the ever higher demands of the mission critical UNIX marketplace. We will continue to concentrate on developing technology that exceeds our customers' expectations in system high reliability and availability."

Brian Richardson of Meta Group stated: "Fujitsu is a major international vendor, and large, sophisticated...shops should consider high-end Fujitsu systems, which offer better price/performance and high availability."

In addition to processor performance increases, Fujitsu also announced that its enterprise class PRIMEPOWER systems would use new 2GB memory modules to double the maximum addressable memory, allowing up to 512GB on the largest servers. This increased memory capability enables very large databases to run more efficiently, which in turn improves performance of large business applications.

- PRIMEPOWER Enhancements
In addition to performance improvements, Fujitsu will provide the following new capabilities and enhancements to the PRIMEPOWER series:

-- Active Resource Management Technology(TM) - The result of an engineering collaboration between Aurema Pty Limited and Fujitsu Ltd, Aurema's revolutionary resource management technology, ARMTech(TM) is now available for PRIMEPOWER series. The ARMTech product has been designed and developed by Aurema to provide detailed monitoring and fine-grained control of critical system resources such as the CPU and memory. The function capabilities of ARMTech allow resources to be precisely allocated to specific applications or users to achieve optimal server utilization or to enforce pre-determined service level agreements. The use of ARMTech on Solaris will provide increased PRIMEPOWER server efficiency, superior quality of service, and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO). Those customers implementing server consolidation will find ARMTech invaluable in managing resource contention among consolidated applications. Application Service Providers (ASPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will use ARMTech not only to improve efficiency and to enforce resource usage limits but also to accurately bill customer by system resource usage. ARMTech is immediately available on all PRIMEPOWER series.

-- Web-based system administration provides the flexibility to monitor PRIMEPOWER servers remotely via the Web. A detailed view of all hardware components allows the system administrator to stay on top of the use and state of the systems in support of data integrity, application assurance, and optimal performance levels. Web-based administration contributes to reduce total cost of ownership.

-- Capacity on Demand enables customers to increase the performance of their systems immediately, by activating pre-configured unused processors on basis of demand. To be offered in Japan market with PRIMEPOWER2000 series systems.

PRIMEPOWER servers are now being used to run some of the world's most demanding systems, Daimler-Chrysler, Southwest Airlines, EMC, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, to name a few. Fujitsu has opened PRIMEPOWER competency centers in the United States, Europe and Japan to provide customers a first-hand view of the most realistic power availability comparisons as well as test-bed facilities for further system performance improvements.

About PRIMEPOWER
PRIMEPOWER servers are developed by Fujitsu Limited in Japan, and sold by Fujitsu group companies in Asia/Pacific, Fujitsu Technology Solutions in North America and Fujitsu-Siemens Computers in EMEA. PRIMEPOWER is now the holder of a number of world records. The range of benchmarks held by PRIMEPOWER can be found at: http://primepower.fujitsu.com/en/benchmark.html PRIMEPOWER high-end models running the Solaris operating environment can scale to 128 processors (PRIMEPOWER2000) and support up to 99.999% system availability.

(1) On August 28, 2001, Fujitsu Limited achieved a new world record in TPC-C benchmark with the PRIMEPOWER2000 SPARC-powered, Solaris-based server using Fujitsu's SymfoWARE Server Enterprise Edition database management system (455,818.20tpmC, at $28.58/tpmC, availability date Feb.28, 2002). Please note that the February 28, 2002 availability date reflects the general release status of the particular database software version used for the benchmark test, and not availability of the hardware, operating system or applications. PRIMEPOWER2000 128-way servers and related operating and application software are available now.
