Tokyo, September 11, 2001---
Fujitsu Limited today announced that it
plans to dispose of Fujitsu Business Communication Systems, Inc.
(FBCS), its PBX business unit based in Irvine, California, as part of
the restructuring plan it announced on August 20. The unit is part
of Fujitsu's telecommunications business group.
Established in 1976 as Fujitsu's first manufacturing and sales
subsidiary in the U.S., FBCS was the base of Fujitsu's PBX business
operations in the U.S. Focusing on the PBX (F-9600 series) as its
main product, over the years FBCS sold approximately 8,000 systems,
primarily to government-sector and academic institutions. In recent
years, however, its performance lagged, in part because of its lack
of success in shifting to the Internet Protocol (IP) solutions
business.
Under its new growth strategy, Fujitsu's telecommunications group
is concentrating its resources on its cutting-edge products in the
fields of photonics, IP and 3G mobile technologies and in
strengthening its solutions business. In the U.S. market as well,
Fujitsu is focusing on the fields of photonics and network
solutions, primarily through Richardson, Texas-based Fujitsu Network
Communications, Inc. (FNC). For these reasons, Fujitsu has decided
to dispose of FBCS, and the company is now evaluating proposals to
sell all or part of FBCS's business.
In Japan, Fujitsu will continue to actively pursue growth of the PBX
business, including development of IP-based solutions business, in
conjunction with its affiliated company, Fujitsu I-Network Systems.
