Fujitsu Introduces Low-cost, Compact Disk Array

Completes GR700 Series SAN-Compatible Disk Array Systems

Tokyo, February 8, 2001---Fujitsu Limited today introduced the GR710, a low-cost, compact disc array system positioned as the low-end model in Fujitsu's SAN-compatible GR700 series. The new model will be initially marketed in Japan and Asia-Pacific, with worldwide sales to follow. Based upon Fujitsu's storage system framework (*1), the GR700 series of disk arrays were developed for open system environments. With the introduction of the GR710, Fujitsu now offers a complete line-up, comprising the low-end GR710, mid-range models GR720 and GR730, and enterprise model GR740.

Businesses today must handle an ever-increasing amount of information, especially those that have the Internet at their core, such as Internet Data Centers (IDCs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Application Service Providers (ASPs) and Storage Service Providers (SSPs). It is expected that these businesses will have to process two and a half times the current volume of information in the year 2003.

Fujitsu's new GR710 employs a modular design enabling flexible scalability of disk array capacity. Moreover, for ISPs and other Internet service businesses that put a premium on reliability and compactness, the modular array enables isolation of discrete sets of customer or application data, thereby more efficient system management. The new disk array comes in a compact 3U height (approximately 13 centimeters) cabinet, yet has a maximum memory capacity of 286GB (*2). The adoption of a Fibre Channel drive interface enables high-speed data transmission of up to 100MB/second. Rack mount models allow the mounting of up to 10 units on a special-purpose rack for scalability of up to 2.8 terabytes, giving users enormous flexibility in choosing the configuration that best suits their needs.

Product Highlights

- Simple Start-up and Flexible Scalability -
Up to twelve disk drives can be attached to each GR710 system. Its compact 3U height and memory capacity of up to 286MB make it easy to introduce in small-scale systems. In addition, the product employs a modular design that allows up to 10 units to be mounted on a special-purpose rack, thereby enabling expansion of total memory capacity up to 2.8 terabytes and making it easy for customers to adjust to rapid increases in data volumes.

- High Speed Fibre Channel Drive Interface -
The system uses a Fibre Channel drive interface with a speed of up to 100MB/second for high-speed data transmission. Depending on their needs, customers can choose from either an 18GB or 36GB disc drive capacity. A 73GB large-capacity disc is also being planned.

- Redundant Configuration of Components Ensures High Reliability
A redundant configuration of important components, such as fans, controllers, and power supplies, ensures a high degree of reliability.

- Abundant Application Software
When used in concert with SystemWalker/StorageMGR, Fujitsu's integrated operation management software, or its high availability SafeCluster software, the GR710 offers the same management and monitoring capabilities as the mid-range to high-end models in the GR700 series.
