Tokyo, February 26, 2001---
Fujitsu Limited today began marketing two newly developed stacked multi-chip package (MCP) products (MB84VN23881EJ and MB84VN23391EJ). Targeted at next-generation cellular telephones, the new products are the world's first MCPs to offer 64Mbit NAND-type flash memory (I/O x16) and 16Mbit FCRAM (I/O x16)(*1) with SRAM interface.
During the last few years, the functions and services available to users of mobile information terminals, particularly cellular telephones, have expanded dramatically. In addition to voice communication, it is now possible to send e-mail and images, view and download pages, and, more recently, use Java to enjoy playing high-quality games on cellular phones. Moreover, beginning in May of this year, when IMT-2000 (*2) next-generation mobile
communication system service is due to start in Japan, value-added services are expected to multiply rapidly, further boosting demand for memory products with greater capacity, faster speed and lower power consumption for use in mobile telephones.
At present, MCPs for cellular telephones contain NOR-type flash memory used for storing programs and SRAMs/FCRAMs for temporary data storage for data re-writes. However, in addition to this, for example, the next generation of cellular telephones will require memory capable of handling large-volume video data.
Designed to meet these requirements, Fujitsu's new MCP products contain high-speed 64Mbit NAND-type flash memory that achieves page unit (*3) write speeds of 200 microseconds and erase speeds of 2 milliseconds for small block units (*4). Since this NAND-type Flash memory is I/O x16, it can rewrite/erase large amounts of serial data at about twice the speed of current NAND products(I/O x8). Also, for temporary storage of data, high-speed/large scale 16Mbit FCRAM is used, making the device ideal for large file storage use.
Fujitsu will continue to supply new MCP products reflecting the changing needs not only for cellular telephones but also for the digital appliance and mobile equipment markets, both of which are expected to grow rapidly in the future.
