Fujitsu Introduces New Hard Disk Drives for OEM Market

-- 3 Models for large enterprise systems and 4 Models for notebook PCs and other portable equipment --

MHN2XXXAT Tokyo, January 25, 2001---Fujitsu Limited today introduced three new 3.5-inch magnetic disk drive models in its MAN3xxx Series for large enterprise systems, and four new 2.5-inch hard disk drives in its MHN2xxxAT Series for notebook PCs and other portable equipment. OEM sales start today through Fujitsu CoWorCo Limited in Japan and Fujitsu's various sales companies worldwide,

The new MAN3xxx Series features a rotational speed of 10,000rpm, and high-capacity storage of 18GB per disk. The storage capacities of the three different models are 18.4GB, 36.7GB and 73.5GB, varying on the number of disk platters within each unit. The new hard disk drives are ideal for use in workstations, servers, and Raid (*1) requiring high performance and high reliability.

Features of the MAN3xxx Series 3.5-inch Hard Disk Drive:

  1. High-capacity Storage of 18.4GB Per Disk
By increasing the areal density, the drive offers high-capacity storage of 18.4GB per disk, an industry record and 2.5 times the capacity of Fujitsu's previous product.

  2. High-speed Transfer Makes Model Suitable for High-performance Hardware
8MB buffer memory (twice the capacity of Fujitsu's previous model) is standard for this model, allowing high-speed read/write processing, even when recording a high volume of data. Average read seek time is 4.5 millisecond, and internal data transfer rate reaches a maximum of 84MB/second, a 34% increase compared to the previous model.

  3. Supports Ultra SCSI 320 (*2) and Fiber-Channel (*3)
For interface, uses Ultra SCSI 160 (with a transfer speed of 160MB/second), Ultra SCSI 320 (320MB/second), and Fiber Channel (2 Gbits/second), enabling data to be transferred between the disk drive and a high-end host at a maximum (interface data transfer) rate of 320MB/second. Drives that support Ultra SCSI 320 and Fiber Channel are expected to be shipped starting in July - September of 2001.

The new MHN2xxxAT Series, compliant with Ultra DMA100 interface (*4), offer a storage capacity of 15GB per disk and attain maximum data transfer speeds of 100MB/second. In addition, in a first for Fujitsu, the 2.5-inch drive is equipped with a load/unload function, which enables the head to be retracted from the top of the disk when the drive is switched off or not in use, improving its resistance to impact and its mobility. The storage capacities of the four different models are 10GB, 15GB, 20GB and 30GB. Also available is a model with fluid bearing motor featuring a noiseless disk rotation and excellent impact resistance. The new MHN2xxxAT series is ideal for use in high performance and high reliability hardware, such as high-end notebook PCs and portable audio equipment.

Features of the MHNxxxAT Series 2.5-inch Magnetic Disk Drive:
  1. Compatible with Ultra DMA100
The new series supports Ultra DMA100 transfer, the latest ATA-5 standard interface, enabling 100MB/second maximum data transfer speed (interface data transfer) between disk drive and high-performance machines.

  2. Equipped with load/unload Function
With the load/unload function, the disk drive's resistance to impact when not in motion is improved by 15%. It also consumes 20% less electricity. (Comparisons are with 10GB HDD equipped with ball bearing motors.)

  3. Equipped with Industry's First FDB Motor (*5)
Fujitsu is the first in the industry to offer the option of an FDB Motor in its 2.5-inch magnetic disk drives. Compared to ball bearing motors, FDB motors feature quieter operation as well as greater impact resistance and durability, and they have won an excellent reception from customers for mobile and office use, as well as in a variety of other environments.
[Glossary]
(*1) RAID:
Technology which manages multiple hard disks as a single unit.
(*2) Ultra SCSI 320:
SCSI-standard interface for connection between PCs and the memory drive of the hard disk. It has a maximum transfer speed of 320MB/second, twice as fast as Ultra 160 (Ultra3 SCSI).
(*3) Fiber Channel:
A method for transferring data among computer peripherals. It is mostly used in high-performance servers to connect host computer to external memory devices.
(*4) Ultra DMA100:
ATA-standard interface for connecting PCs and storage devices, such as hard disks. Also known as Ultra ATA/100, it has a maximum transfer speed of 100MB/second, three times faster than ATA(/33).
(*5) FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) Motor:
Motor which uses viscous oil in its rotational component instead of metal ball-bearings. FDB technology reduces rotational fluctuations and increases the accuracy of head positioning. As a result, read/write reliability is improved. In addition, since there is no friction among metal components, it is superior in terms of quietness of operation, impact resistance and durability.
