Fujitsu Introduces Three New 3.5-inch Hard Drive Models
-- Achieve 20GB memory capacity per disk at 7,200rpm --

MPG3xxxAH-E Tokyo, October 5, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited today introduced three new large-capacity 3.5-inch magnetic disk drive models in its MPG3xxxAH-E Series, each featuring a rotational speed of 7200rpm. Two of the models (the single disk MPG3204AH-E, and dual disk MPG3409AH-E) boast high-capacity storage of 20.4GB per disk, while the third model (the dual disk MPG3307AH-E) offers a per disk capacity of approximately 15GB. The new hard disk drives are ideally suited for use in high performance and high reliability systems, such as high-end PCs, workstations, servers and machines with Raid(*1) capabilities.

The new drives also incorporate Fujitsu's pioneering Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB*2) motor in all three models. Developed and introduced by Fujitsu last year, the FDB motor achieves quieter, more reliable performance, as well as improved durability and impact resistance.

OEM sales start today through Fujitsu CoWorCo Limited in Japan and Fujitsu's various sales companies worldwide, with sample shipments scheduled to commence later in October.

[Product highlights]

** All three models equipped with industry's first FDB motor **
These models are the fifth generation of devices to be equipped with the FDB motor since Fujitsu first introduced it in July 1999. Compared to ball bearing motors, FDB motors feature quieter operation as well as greater impact resistance and durability, and they have won an excellent reception from customers for a variety of uses. (Note: FDB motor is optional for 20.4GB model)
** High-speed transfer makes models suitable for high-performance use **
2MB buffer memory and 7,200rpm rotation speed are standard for all three models. With a 8.5 millisecond average seek time (read time) with an internal data transfer speed(*3) of 486Mbps (max) -- 25% faster than previous models -- the Series offers greatly improved overall performance suited for high-performance systems.
** Compatible with Ultra DMA100(*4) **
The new series supports Ultra DMA-100 transfer, the latest ATA-5(*5) standard interface, enabling 100MB/second maximum data transfer speed (interface data transfer) between disk drive and high-performance machines.
** Improved system reliability **
Addition of temperature reading capability to the SMART (Self Monitoring Analysis And Reporting Technology *6) function -- designed to prevent sudden system shutdowns -- enhances overall system reliability

[Glossary]

(*1) Raid:
Technology which manages multiple hard disks as a single unit.
(*2) FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) motor:
Motor which uses viscous oil in its rotational component instead of metal ball-bearings. FDB reduces rotational fluctuations and increases the accuracy of head positioning. As a result, data read/write reliability is improved. In addition, since there is no friction with metal components, it is superior in terms of quietness of operation, impact resistance and durability.
(*3) Internal data transfer speed:
Data transfer speed between disk media and buffer within a disk device.
(*4) Ultra DMA100:
ATA-standard interface for connection between PCs and storage devices such as hard disks. Also known as Ultra ATA/100, it has a maximum transfer speed of 100MB/second, three times faster than ATA(/33).
(*5) ATA (AT Attachment)-5:
Interface standard between such peripherals as hard disk drives and computers. Improved over ATA-4, the maximum transfer speed is 100MB/second. ATA-5 standard is three times faster than ATA-4.
(*6) SMART (Self Monitoring Analysis And Reporting Technology) Function:
Self-monitors the internal functioning of the device. Prevents sudden system shutdowns by foreseeing potential problems, such as increasing errors or other evidence of instability, and sending an alarm to the system in advance.
