Fujitsu Introduces 1/4-inch VGA-compatible CMOS Color Image Sensor
-- The world's smallest LCC package with built-in lens --

MB86S01 Tokyo: October 5, 2000 --- In cooperation with Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., Fujitsu Limited has developed the world's smallest CMOS color image sensor(*1) (model MB86S01) for mobile devices. Employing the world's smallest LCC packaging(*2) technology, the new product features low power consumption and high resolution (350 thousand pixels) in a 10 mm x 10 mm x 10 mm package.

Concurrently, Fujitsu has developed a new Digital Signal Processor(*3) (MB86571), which, together with the new sensor, can be used as a compact, low-power image input device for mobile information terminals. The two new products go on sale today.

CMOS color image sensors have recently become widely used in compact digital cameras, PCs and mobile information terminals for such applications as processing and transmission over the Internet of captured image data.
As digital equipment becomes smaller while performance levels continue to increases, the demand for smaller and higher performance CMOS image sensors with low power consumption will also continue to increase.

Fujitsu's new image sensor utilizes the company's proprietary process technology to realize a pixel size of just 5.5 square microns. Together with the reduction in lens size to 1/4 inch, the compact sensor achieves a high resolution of 350,000 pixels.

By optimizing its analog circuit and AD converter(*4), Fujitsu's new product also achieve among the industry's lowest levels of power consumption for a VGA(*5) - compatible image sensor. In addition, Fujitsu's high-density packaging technology makes it the world's smallest (10mm x 10mm x 10mm) product of its type.

The MB86S01 sensor is sample priced at 3,000 Japanese yen, and the MB8657 DSP at 1,500 yen. Both products are expected to start shipping in December.
