Tokyo, October 26, 2000 -- Positioning Linux as a major operating
system in the Internet business field along with Unix and Windows
2000, Fujitsu will put significant resources into developing its
Linux-related business. In addition to strengthening its promotion
structure for Linux, the company is expanding its offerings of
Linux-compatible products.
In recent years, Linux has gained recognition as an essential
server OS for the Internet. As Internet technology becomes more
and more widely used by companies, Linux is increasingly being
adopted as an ideal platform for business. Fujitsu has been
quick to respond to its customers' growing interest in Linux,
offering Linux basic support service since March 1999 and
establishing the Fujitsu Linux Center (FLC) in January 2000.
Fujitsu was also first in the industry to offer operational
warrantees for Linux platforms. Moreover, in October 2000,
Fujitsu became an investor in Turbo Linux, Inc.
In order to better meet customer needs, which have expanded
greatly with the increasing use of the Internet, on September
25th this year, Fujitsu set up a Linux Business Division within
its Software Business Group, giving it responsibility for
overseeing the FLC. This has strengthened its organizational
structure for promoting the development of Linux-based Internet
solutions. In addition to the FLC, a new 100-person Development
Department will be set up under the Linux Business Division,
charged with expanding the scope of applications for Linux-based
systems.
Outside Japan, Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Amdahl will spearhead
the group's Linux-related business development in their respective
markets.
Specific examples of Fujitsu's activities and initiatives related
to Linux include the following:
- Aggressive promotion of Linux as a system component in the
SI field
Linux appliance servers are being offered as a part of Fujitsu's
system integration services and connectivity with Fujitsu
mainframes and Unix servers is being enhanced so as to facilitate
Linux add-ons for legacy core operations systems.
- All-in-one product offerings in the Internet server field
Fujitsu will offer all-in-one products in the Internet server
field, including hardware for tasks that take advantage of the
strengths of Linux, such as Web servers, mail servers, and DNS
servers. There are also plans to offer a Linux-compatible
version of Fujitsu's Success Server, an all-in-one product Web
application architecture product geared to mid-sized companies.
- Successive release of Linux-compatible middleware products
As part of its comprehensive support for Linux, Fujitsu is
steadily making its middleware products Linux-compatible.
Products include:
- Web application server (Interstage)
- Integrated operations management tool (SystemWalker)
- Web-centric groupware (TeamWARE)
- Development environments (FORTRAN&C Package and C++ Package)
- Web-based training system (Internet Navigware)
- Expanded lineup of Linux-compatible hardware products
- All models of Fujitsu's PRIMERGY Intel architechture (IA) servers
support Linux. In addition, support (including operating
warrantees) is offered for all Linux-supported models through
Fujitsu's SupportDesk service.
- Fujitsu plans to introduce a Linux-based PRIMERGY model bundled
with OracleSi.
- Fujitsu's Celsius IA workstation will be made Linux-compatible.
- A Linux operating inspection information and operating warranty
service is planned for all models in Fujitsu's FMV series of
desktop computers.
- In addition to TurboLinux and OpenLinux, Red Hat Linux will be
added to Fujitsu's systems support portfolio.
- Products for the embedded Linux field are currently under
development.
- Strengthened Fujitsu Linux Center
- Fujitsu intends to strengthen and expand the FLC, participate in
Linux industry associations, cooperate widely with various ISVs,
and devote itself to building solutions for customers.
- An operation verification environment will be put in place and
the system for supporting operation verification and application
migration at the time of system installation will be further
strengthened.
All the measures described above will be instituted successively
starting in December 2000. Based on these efforts, a sales target
of 15,000 Linux-based systems in Japan has been set for the next
two years.
