Tokyo, September 19, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited today introduced the world's smallest, lightest 3.5-inch magneto-optical (MO) disk drive. Dubbed the "mobile MO" (model MCG3064AP), the new product, which weighs 295 grams and is only 17mm thick, comes in a compact, easy-to-carry cartridge size.
Sales of the new drive will commence today and will be available through
Fujitsu's various sales companies worldwide.
Compared with its previous 3.5-inch MO drives, Fujitsu's new mobile MO is
40% smaller and lighter and uses 25% less power, thanks to the use of
lighter moving parts and enhanced power management. The new MO's low
power consumption also allows it to run on power supplied by IEEE1394
(FireWire) cable or PCMCIA card without connecting to an AC adapter.
Responding to the growing demand for high-capacity, power-efficient
compact removable storage for the fast-growing portable PC market, the
mobile MO is a timely addition to Fujitsu's MO lineup. As the world's
leading MO disk device manufacturer, Fujitsu offers a wide array of MO
products, including 1.3GB capacity 3.5-inch GIGAMO, to fill a variety of
market needs.
Mobile MO is also the world's first storage product equipped with the
Media ID function, which is designed to protect the copyrights of online
digital content and digital data. The Media ID function for 3.5-inch
MO devices was jointly announced recently by eight media and device
manufacturers.
Spearheaded by growth in Japan, MO disk drives and media have been
expanding by 40% annually on a global basis. Approximately, 8 million
devices and 100 million media disks will be shipped by the end of this
fiscal year (*1). Fujitsu's new mobile MO is appropriate both for
corporate data storage use and personal use in the storage of a wide
range of online digital information, such as music, videos and moving
images.
Sample shipments will commence on October 1, with volume production to
start in November. Sales in Japan will be handled by Fujitsu CoWorCo
Limited. In Japan, OEM sample units are priced at 50,000 yen (less tax).
Fujitsu aims to sell 3 million units of the MCG3064AP mobile MO within
the first two years. (Note: Please contact local representatives for
pricing outside Japan.)
