Tokyo, August 30, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited today will begin marketing two 32Mbit page-mode flash memory devices
with high-speed read time of 20 nanoseconds (ns). The devices were jointly developed with strategic partner Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) of the U.S. The new flash
memory products, MBM29PL3200TE and MBM29PL3200BE, are the industry's first to have a 32-bit data transfer rate.
As exemplified by the higher speed of laser printers and the advent of auto navigation systems with faster map-searching as well as communications ability, in recent
years there have been dramatic advances in the speed, performance and multi-functionality of various electronic products. Demand for faster microprocessors used in such products has in turn heightened requirements for increasing data transfer rates from current x8-bit/x16-bit to x32-bit and beyond. Similarly, demand is increasing for flash memory devices with greater speed and higher data
transfer rates.
In addition to industry-leading access speed and data transfer rates, Fujitsu's new 32-bit page-mode flash memory devices feature SSOP (*1) packaging based on that of page access-type mask-ROM, which allows them to be mounted on the same board as the mask-ROM. Other features include a Hi-ROM (*2) function to prevent illegal copies and an accelerator function for speeding write time.
Fujitsu already offers 16Mbit high-speed page-mode flash memory products, which have found wide use, particularly for equipment like printers and car navigation
systems where high-speed read function is required.
Sample shipments of the new 32Mbit page-mode flash memory devices, which are priced at 3,500 yen (SSOP), begin today. Fujitsu has set a combined sales target
(MBM292PL3200 TE/BE) of 1 million units per month.
