Tokyo, August 30, 2000 - Fujitsu Limited today announced the best ever
TPC-C benchmark performance result for a commercial Unix server running
the popular Oracle8i(TM) database. On July 21st a 64-processor GP7000F
model 2000 SPARC server using the Solaris(TM) operating environment
achieved a performance result of 138,735.06 tpmC at an average of
$74.32/tpmC, supporting 114,000 users. The benchmark result and use of
Oracle8i are significant for Fujitsu's customers. They show that the
combination of Fujitsu technology and the world's most popular database
means top class price performance
"We are using the same SPARC64 GP technology in the development of our
recently announced PRIMEPOWER global brand of servers, successors to
the GP7000F and GRANPOWER7000 series," said Mr. Takashi Aoki, Group
Executive and Vice President, Computer Systems Group, Fujitsu Limited.
"Moreover, we expect further benchmark improvements with upcoming
PRIMEPOWER 2000 models, which will use 450MHz SPARC64 GP processors
instead of the 350MHz processors used in the GP7000F model 2000
benchmark test."
The benchmark was achieved using a single system rather than a server
cluster. The 114,000 online users were front end managed by 24 Fujitsu
PRIMERGY dual Pentium III processor servers. The simplicity of the
configuration suggests even greater possibilities for performance growth
when larger PRIMEPOWER servers and clusters become available early next
year.
GP7000F and the underlying SPARC64 GP technology have achieved a number
of benchmark successes in recent months, including excellent results
with SAP R/3 and Baan that have also shown the power and performance of
Fujitsu's systems.
GP7000F and the successor PRIMEPOWER servers use Fujitsu SPARC64 GP
processors, the world's faster inter-processor bus technology, and the
standard Solaris operating environment on all models. The ability to
achieve such high performance with tier 1 software and an open database
system like Oracle8i, shows that these servers are well able to handle
the most demanding business applications.
Fujitsu's PRIMEPOWER UNIX servers are intended to expand customer options
and strengthen the position of Solaris as the Unix system of choice
against other more proprietary varieties of Unix.

Details on TPC-C and tmpC:
TPC-C is a standardized benchmark test for evaluating the throughput
performance of complete system configurations. The TPC-C benchmark comes
under the jurisdiction of the Transaction Processing Performance
Council (TPC). The results may be published only after having been
audited by a TPC-appointed auditor. The TPC-C benchmark models a
database application for a warehouse. While the system processes a
number of simulated payment, order status, delivery and stock-level
transactions, the benchmark measures the number of "new order"
transactions that can still be accepted. The tpmC metric indicates the
number of "new order" transactions which can be fully processed per
minute with a response time of less than five seconds. Further
information on the TPC institution, the TPC-C benchmark and published
benchmark results can be downloaded from the TPC website at

PRIMEPOWER and GP7000F/GRANPOWER7000
PRIMEPOWER is the new global branding of Fujitsu's UNIX servers previously
marketed as the GP7000For GRANPOWER 7000 series in Japan, Asia/Pacific
and the USA. PRIMEPOWER, like its predecessors, is a Solaris-based Unix
server family that uses Fujitsu SPARC64 GP processors and Fujitsu's
world's fastest crossbar switch technology to produce very competitive
and high performance UNIX commercial servers. Fujitsu has developed the
PRIMEPOWER series to broaden customer choice in the Solaris market and
strengthen the position of Solaris as the Unix environment of choice
for ISV's and corporate data centers.
