Tokyo, August 1, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited has begun trials to evaluate
Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) functionality for high-speed
Internet data transfer on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switches
it has supplied to Cable & Wireless HKT. Following the trials,
Fujitsu plans to proceed with development of MPLS functionality for
commercial service.
Since 1998, Cable & Wireless HKT has been operating the world's first
and largest commercial Interactive Multimedia Services, including
video and music on demand, home shopping, etc., using Fujitsu's ATM
switches as the core switching systems. Cable & Wireless HKT is
also the leading broadband Internet Service Provider in Hong Kong.
MPLS is seen as a key technology for combining the advantages of
Cable & Wireless HKT's large-scale ATM switching network and router-
based IP networks. It is a cut-through style packet transfer
technology in which packets are assigned identifying labels and
forwarded along label switch paths. The switches that receive the
labeled packets forward them based solely on the contents of the
label, thereby eliminating the path selection process and enabling
higher speed transfer.
In the future, commercial use of MPLS technology will guarantee
Quality of Service (QoS) and enable business and individual
users with IP network connections to receive not only standard
data services but enhanced broadband applications, as well as
voice and images.
With the accelerated introduction of such new services, Fujitsu
anticipates sales of IP (Internet Protocol) switches and IP-related
equipment to be worth about 5 billion yen over the next three years.
