Tokyo, August 1, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited today announced three new models and new and faster SPARC processors for its Solaris-based PRIMEPOWER server range. The new models, available worldwide from the end of this month, offer workgroup and mid-range size systems that complement larger data center systems previously announced. New generation processors offer step improvements to 360MHz, 400MHz and 450MHz above Fujitsu SPARC64 GP processors used in previous models.
Fujitsu recently adopted PRIMEPOWER as its global brand for SPARC Unix servers, and these new models will replace the company's GP7000F and GRANPOWER7000 products sold in Japan and some other markets. Fully compatible with the Solaris operating environment, PRIMEPOWER servers now come in six sizes. They start with the new model 200 2-way workgroup units, and scale all the way to the 128-way-capable model 2000.
"The environment in which business is conducted is changing rapidly and the conversion to Internet technology is now encompassing a business model which includes outsourcing," said Mr. Takashi Aoki, Group Executive Vice President, Computer Systems Group, Fujitsu Limited. "With PRIMEPOWER we are seeking to address all power requirements on the web from small electronic commerce sites through to the needs of ASPs and the emerging Internet data centers."
The PRIMEPOWER range of servers provides excellent scalability and is designed to encompass as many areas of use as possible. The aim is to make the same powerful innovative technology and software environment available in a range of form factors to match the multi-tiered nature of Internet architecture. In addition the range now provides the levels of extensibility needed to manage the ever-increasing amounts of data being processed by ISV's and ASP's back-end servers.
The new 360MHz, 400MHz and 450MHz processors will be used to build on the benchmarking success of Fujitsu's current 300MHz SPARC64 GP processors, which have already been setting UNIX benchmarks standards with companies like SAP and Baan and the TPC council.
The three new models are:
PRIMEPOWER 200 - A 1- or 2-processor entry-level floor standing or rackmount server aimed at workgroup and front-end process tasks. It uses 250MHz or 300MHz SPARC64 GP processors and will be available from the end of August.
PRIMEPOWER 400 - An up to 4-processor departmental or dedicated application rackmount node for the data center. It uses 300MHz or 400MHz SPARC64 GP processors and achieves a peak system bus speed of 3.2GB/sec. Available from end of August.
PRIMEPOWER 600 - A 2- to 8-processor floor standing or rackmount server aimed at larger electronic commerce applications and mission critical database applications where very high levels of availability are required. It uses 360MHz or 450MHz SPARC64 GP processors and achieves a peak system bus speed of 6.3GB/sec. Available at the end of August for 360MHz and the end of October for 450MHz.
