Fujitsu Introduces New F2MC Series Microcontrollers

- Includes low-voltage (1.8V), high-speed 16-bit models and low-voltage (2.4V) model with internal flash memory -

MB90473/90F474/90V470Tokyo, June 30, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited today introduced three new products in the F2MC(R) (Fujitsu Flexible Microcontroller) series of system control microcomputers. New models MB90473 and the MB90474 are 16-bit microcontrollers with 1.8V low-power operation for digital AV devices. Model MB90F474, also a low-voltage (2.4V) 16-bit microcontroller, features built-in flash memory. All three products go on sale beginning today.

In recent years, consumer products such as digital audio- video devices and peripherals for personal computers have rapidly acquired more sophisticated functions. This has created a need for faster speeds and lower power consumption in the microcomputers for the systems that control these functions.

The industry's first 16-bit microcontrollers to run at 1.8V, which enables longer battery life and decreased power consumption, Fujitsu's new high-speed (5MHz) MB90473 and MB90474 models are ideally suited for controlling systems of such AV devices as home audio and silicon audio *1 and for personal computer peripherals such as CD-RW and DVD-ROM devices.

Both models have internal clock multiplier circuits *2, set one to four times the speed (in increments of integers) of the standard cycle oscillator. Thus, the internal operating cycles of the microcontroller can be set at a high value even if a low-price, low-cycle standard cycle oscillator is installed. In addition, the MB90474 has a high-capacity memory (256KB ROM, 16KB RAM).

The newly developed model MB90F474 is the world's first 2.4V low-voltage operation 256-kilobyte microcontroller equipped with internal flash memory. Because microcontrollers with internal flash memory can easily handle program modifications and enable memory expansion, they can be used in a wide range of devices. Fujitsu anticipates a steady increase in demand for this product.

Some microcontrollers with internal flash memory require two power sources for write/erase and read functions, however, since Fujitsu's microcontroller with internal flash memory has built-in booster circuits *3 in the flash memory, it operates on a single power source. This makes possible lower costs, smaller devices, and simpler power source designs.

Fujitsu has set a monthly sales target of 2 million units for three models combined. Since 1985, the company has been offering F2MC microcontrollers for consumer devices. As it works to further enhance the F2MC line-up for digital AV devices and automobile information terminals, Fujitsu aims to continue its industry leadership in developing lower voltage and higher performance microcontrollers.

Glossary
  1. Silicon audio: audio playback devices that use semiconductor memory as their storage media
  2. Clock multiplier circuit: A circuit which generates cycles in integer increments internally and supplies them as an internal clock in order to speed up the operation of the internal circuits with respect to external basic cycles
  3. Booster circuit: A circuit for generating a voltage higher than standard voltage. In flash memory, a booster circuit is used to increase power source voltage to the higher voltage needed for writing.
  4. Non-multiplex path: A path formula in which the address path and the data path diverge (are independent).
  5. UART: (universal asynchronous receiver transmitter) start-stop synchronous serial communications
  6. LSB: (Least Significant Bit) Lowest-ranking bit. MSB: (Most Significant Bit) Highest-ranking bit
  7. PWC timer: (Pulse Width counter) A timer that can count pulse widths
  8. PPG timer: (Programmable Pulse Generator) A timer that freely sets the cycles and amplitude of the output pulses
  9. DTP: (Data Transfer Peripheral) A terminal which takes the DMA (Direct Memory Access) demands or interrupt demands from external peripherals and activates automatic transmission to the F2MC-16LX CPU.
