Tokyo, April 5, 2000 -- Fujitsu Limited and Itochu Corporation
announced today that they have been awarded an order for a CDMA-WLL*
wireless telephone network system from Colombia's EPMBOGOTA S.A. ESP.
Valued at 5 billion yen, the order is the first for a CDMA-WLL
system in Colombia.
In addition to the CDMA-WLL system, which will upgrade telephone and
data transmission networks for 45,000 line subscribers in Bogota,
Fujitsu and Itochu will also supply digital switches and Synchronous
Digital Hierarchy optical transmission system.
EPMBOGOTA was founded in 1997 to serve the city of Bogota by its
parent company, EMPRESAS PUBLICAS DE MEDELLIN, a telecommunications
and utility company based in Medellin. Since then, Fujitsu and Itochu
have been supplying EPMBOGOTA with switches as well as transmission
and PHS-WLL* telephone equipment (95,000 lines) on a turnkey basis
under an exclusive contract.
EPMBOGOTA announced international tenders last June for a CDMA-WLL
system to expand their operations, and Fujitsu and Itochu submitted
their joint bid on July 26th. The two companies' successful supply
record to EPM as well as the high technical standard of Fujitsu's
mobile communication technology - including its high-speed 144kbps
cdma2000 (1X) packet mode data transmission technology for the IP
network - helped them win the contract.
Fujitsu and Itochu have also been awarded order for an CDMA-WLL system
with 22,000 lines by EMPRESAS PUBLICAS DE MEDELLIN, and the contract
for this project is expected to be concluded in April. Since 1984,
the companies have jointly supplied digital switches for 670,000 lines
to EMPRESAS PUBLICAS DE MEDELLIN.
