FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fujitsu European Centre for Information Technology Opens New Technical Computing Facility

- Provides close support for ISVs to extend technical applications on the latest parallel computational technology -

Tokyo, February 14, 2000 - Fujitsu Limited today gives a major boost to the European technical application business by opening the Fujitsu Technical Computing Facility in Paris, France. This center will host Fujitsu parallel compute servers for use by technical ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) to port, tune and validate their applications. The Facility will be managed by Fujitsu European Centre for Information Technology Ltd, the applied technical computing research division of Fujitsu, headquartered in London, UK, with subsidiary offices in Toulouse, France.

Europe has long been a pioneer in the use of technical computing for industry as well as scientific research, generating a total market today worth around 2000 million Euro annually. Moreover, Europe is a leading producer of the most sophisticated technical applications software, used world-wide in all fields of industry. By locating this new test and development resource in Paris, Fujitsu provides the resources to support its ISV partners in maintaining their codes at the forefront of their businesses.

The Facility comprises a range of advanced compute server technology, including VPP5000 vector-parallel supercomputer systems, the machine with the world's fastest peak single-processor performance - at 9.6 Gflops. A GP7000F multi-processor Solaris server system - based on Fujitsu SPARC processors - is also installed at the centre. Further systems will continue to be added, such as a PC cluster environment, so that the Facility ultimately supports a broad range of processor and system architectures.

These resources are offered to ISVs to port and validate their applications. In addition, the Facility is available for designing and benchmarking end-user studies. Finally, with different types of servers to work on, ISVs can evaluate and develop their codes to fit the emerging system architectures, in particular multi-layer memory hierarchies.

Expert staff will be available at the Facility to provide an immediate point of contact for Fujitsu partners. Moreover, they are backed by the extensive network of application and benchmarking experts throughout the Fujitsu organisation, from across Europe, the USA and Japan. They will advise and assist on the development of software technologies to fully exploit the potential of the applications.

"Fujitsu is committed to providing the high performance solutions for industrial customers as well as for the scientific users worldwide," said Mr. Tatsushi Miyazawa, Computer Systems Group President, Fujitsu Limited. "The creation of this new computing facility in Europe will strengthen and accelerate the collaboration with our ISV partners and provide more efficient support to the end-users."

Fujitsu has delivered a total of approximately 400 vector supercomputers throughout the world, of which 160 are in the VX/VPP300/VPP700/VPP800/VPP5000 series. More than 30 VPP Series systems have already been installed throughout Europe, of which two VPP5000 systems, the company's newest supercomputers, are operating in France at Meteo-France and CEA (Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique).
