Fujitsu Announces a Brand New Series of teamservers
- Stronger perpetual computing features and Ultra160 mean greater Internet readiness -
Tokyo, January 17, 2000 - Fujitsu Limited today announced a complete
revision of all its reliable teamserver brand mid-range servers. Under
the heading of perpetual computing, new and smarter RAS features are
introduced. These make teamservers even easier to deploy as highly
available and very low maintenance application and Internet platforms.
The four new series in revised cabinet styling and easy access panels
will start shipping from the beginning of March. These models span the
requirements for 1 to 4processor systems and fit underneath the HS900
8-way teamservers announced before Christmas. Called ES200, ES300,
MS400 and MS600, the majority are based on the latest Intel(R)
Pentium(R) III processors using 0.18 micron process technology.
Processor speeds are up to 733MHz, 133MHz or 100MHz processor bus
technology is used as appropriate and 1.6GB/sec memory access is
achieved using dual memory bus architecture. A special entry-level
model for SE Asia and China using the Intel(R) Celeron(TM) processor
running at 466MHz is available and the larger four way capable systems
use 550MHz Intel(R) Pentium(R) III Xeon(TM) processors with 2MB cache.
"In line with our President's vision of everything on the Internet we
have reinforced the suitability of our mid-range teamservers for
continuous operation," said Isao Suzuki, Senior Vice President and
Group President Marketing Group, Fujitsu Limited. "Our perpetual
computing strategy means we have introduced more component redundancy,
proactive operation and inbuilt diagnostics to allow our customers to
better utilize our servers in 24/7 environments."
Many new RAS features are introduced at this release. The most
significant is the IMP Intelligent Monitoring Panel. This combines
full server monitoring of over three hundred hardware and software
events with Fujitsu's Preventative Maintenance Alerting (PMA)
firmware. Now warnings, faults and alerts are indicated by a group of
colored lights on the front panel of the server, often before actual
failure occurs. On larger and more expensive models this is
accompanied by a detailed error or warning message on an LCD panel
together with remedial information displayed by use of another inbuilt
Fujitsu product the Fast Reliable Diagnosis (FRD) system.
"teamservers have always met the approval of engineers for design and
quality of build, you just have to take off the covers and look," Isao
Suzuki also said. "Now with the new intelligent monitoring and self-
diagnostic features we believe we will also win the approval of
systems administrators and business managers interested in the lowest
possible total cost of ownership."
Other key features include the introduction of Ultra160 SCSI bus
technology and matching 10,000rpm Ultra160 hard disk drives. After
exhaustive evaluation Fujitsu has chosen to use Adaptec's Ultra160
SCSI controller ASIC (AIC-7899) and adapter card (ASC-29160) with
these new teamservers. Now by installing Adaptec's Ultra160 SCSI
products within the new teamservers Fujitsu believes it will be able
to provide its customers with the fastest I/O environment available
today.
"Signing customers like Fujitsu provides further validation that
Ultra160 is rapidly gaining a foothold in the computing marketplace
and Adaptec is the technology enabler for this trend," said Jeff
Loebbaka, Vice President of Marketing at Adaptec. "We are
delighted that once again we are working with a company that really
knows how to achieve the best performance from our products."
To ensure maximum performance in all other features the new
teamservers also come with larger standard memory, memory scrubbing
to reduce the incidence of two bit errors, higher levels of
redundancy and the latest in cool and quiet operation from new
"proactive" fans.
While all this is going on existing teamserver C300i, C800i, G800i
and L800i systems will continue to be maintained and enhanced for
the foreseeable future. They will also be attractively priced and
positioned below that of the new series. In line with this strategy
of gradual replacement, 750MHz Intel(R) Pentium(R) III processor
systems will be introduced in the C800i and G800i series and the
series will be refreshed as shown in the tables below prior to the
full introduction of the ES300 and MS400 models.
