COMPUTER ASSOCIATES AND FUJITSU SHIP JASMINE, FIRST PURE OBJECT SOLUTION FOR BUILDING NEXT-GENERATION BUSINESS SYSTEMS

NEW YORK, N.Y., December 10, 1997--Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) and Fujitsu Limited today began full-scale shipment of Jasmine, the first pure object solution for building next-generation business systems over Internet and client/server computing environments. Jasmine offers developers an object-oriented platform ideally suited for dynamic multimedia applications while delivering the integrity and practical data management required for mainstream business solutions.

"For years, object technology has been long on promise and short on reality, forcing programmers to learn complex languages and cobble together nonintegrated databases and tools," said CA Chairman and CEO Charles B. Wang. "That's why we teamed with Fujitsu, developer of world class object database technology, to jointly develop and globally market this breakthrough technology."

Jasmine comes with comprehensive class libraries for creating and managing multimedia data, including bitmaps, animation, audio and full-motion video. It supports a wide range of next-generation applications - -from electronic commerce and customer support to industry-specific applications in sectors such as insurance, financial services, health care and telecommunications. Enterprise data connectivity and adherence to industry standards make it easy to connect Jasmine applications to the rest of the information enterprise.

"Although Fujitsu has been developing and deploying object database technology for more than 10 years, even a company our size needed the additional expertise and resources of a leading IT solutions provider like Computer Associates to successfully develop a revolutionary product like Jasmine," said Tatsuzumi Furukawa, Fujitsu's Director of the Board and Group President of the Multimedia Content Business Group. "Jasmine gives companies the power to work with a wide variety of object types - including graphics, animation, audio and video - to create new applications for the wired global marketplace."

Jasmine's simplicity gives both programmers and non-programmers the ability to exploit the power of object technology to meet critical business objectives. By coupling ease of development with the tremendous power of the Internet (or corporate intranets and extranets), Jasmine enables organizations to decrease the cost of finding buyers and sellers, expand markets geometrically, and streamline production and payment processes.

"We wanted to create a dealership application that would absolutely captivate the customers' attention," said Kevin Smith, national parts and accessories systems manager at Toyota of Australia. "Clearly, an object database was essential for what we wanted to build, and we didn't have the time to waste fiddling around with difficult programming languages like C++. We needed an intuitive, visual development environment that was seamlessly integrated with the database to meet our prototype development schedule. Jasmine and CA were instrumental in helping Toyota explore the opportunities of using a multimedia application to increase genuine accessory sales."

Jasmine applications can be deployed in any type of computing environment, from the Internet to heterogeneous corporate intranets to private value-added networks, and can be run in Web browsers via built-in Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape plug-ins.

Pre-packaged class libraries, both from CA and third parties, help Jasmine developers build and deploy applications quickly. This is important not only to professional programmers, but also to the swelling ranks of casual developers who are increasingly involved with corporate technology - including Webmasters, business analysts, and other sophisticated users.

Multimedia and Complex Object Support

Jasmine's pure object architecture eliminates the extensive overhead associated with mapping objects to relational structures. By utilizing an inherently object-oriented approach in combination with SQL class libraries to reach into existing data repositories, Jasmine customers reap the full benefits of pure object technology without sacrificing investments made in relational data and applications.

"CA's Jasmine is a revolutionary product, which we believe may well be able to achieve the long-awaited promise of object databases," said Christopher S. Selland, research director, The Yankee Group. "The product offers all the benefits and capabilities of a pure object-based platform, avoiding the trade-offs inherent in hybrid products."

Through its highly effective data storage and delivery facilities, Jasmine significantly lowers technology deployment costs, in addition to vastly enhancing the effectiveness of these technologies.

"Jasmine's top-to-bottom, object-oriented architecture is very appealing to us. The database stores video as video, audio as audio, images as images," said Michel Barry, technical director for L'Oreal. "Jasmine provides the optimum solution for centralizing and managing complex information. And, because it is completely Web-enabled, it provides a solid foundation for an intranet project."

Complete and Open Architecture

JADE, the Jasmine Application Development Environment, provides an easy-to-use, code-free multimedia authoring and application development environment with tools for rapidly designing and debugging sophisticated applications. Jasmine's open architecture also allows developers to use a wide variety of popular tools, including 100 percent Pure Java, C, C++, native HTML, and Visual Basic or any other ActiveX tool. Jasmine also facilitates development of cross-functional and specialized class libraries that address current and emerging business needs.

Jasmine provides native access to relational and other data sources, including OpenIngres, Oracle, Informix, SQL Server, CA-IDMS, CA-Datacom and DB2. Support for the emerging OLE DB standard and ODBC allows Jasmine to work with popular report writers and decision support tools.

Such complete and open access enables organizations to leverage their existing investments while building the next generation of business applications. In addition to hundreds of beta customers, consultants, and value-added resellers who are already using Jasmine, dozens of hardware and software vendors have taken advantage of free Jasmine developer licenses to build complementary solutions.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for Jasmine starts at $800, with substantial discounts for volume purchases. A Developer Edition is currently available at no charge. The initial release of Jasmine supports UNIX and Windows NT servers along with Windows 95 and Windows NT clients.
