FUJITSU AND SUN TO COOPERATE ON HIGH-END SPARC™ PROCESSORS
--Multi-Year Agreement To Improve Architecture--

Tokyo, October 14, 1999 - Fujitsu Limited and Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced they have agreed to jointly develop a common programmers' reference model for future generations of high-end SPARC™ processors. This agreement represents a further step in efforts by Sun and Fujitsu to make the SPARC architecture even stronger in high-end computing in the future.

The two companies will work to jointly support additional extensions to the SPARC architecture. This agreement will result in the collaboration between two world-class high-end microprocessor design teams with the goal of assuring enhanced software compatibility on all future SPARC processor architecture implementations.

The joint efforts of Sun and Fujitsu will continue to ensure ISVs can run their software on future versions of either company's processor implementations while taking advantage of new features. Over time, the agreement has the potential to extend to alignment on most aspects of design including networking, reliability and scalability features of the SPARC processor architecture in the future.

"Working together both Sun and Fujitsu can accelerate architectural innovation and expand the overall market for SPARC processors."

These technologies are incorporated into Fujitsu's SPARC64™ GP processor architecture", said Yoshiro Yoshioka, Fujitsu's senior vice president and group president of strategy and planning. "The combination of Sun's experience with its proven UltraSPARC™ technology and Fujitsu's with its SPARC64 GP technology will provide an excellent background with which to refine the SPARC software environment and investments for the future products of both companies."

As part of the agreement, Sun and Fujitsu will ensure enhanced compatibility between software interfaces by developing a joint programmers' specification. This will result in a common programmers' reference model that will clearly define the software compatibility of future processors. This activity builds on the existing compatibility between SPARC64 GP processors and the UltraSPARC processors that exists from their common SPARC V9 instruction set architecture.

The SPARC64 GP family is Fujitsu's high-performance, highly-integrated superscalar processor family that is compliant to the SPARC V9 64-bit architecture. The SPARC64 GP architecture is developed based on long experiences in high reliability system design, high performance scientific computer and state of the art semiconductor technology. It is the key component of a reliable, powerful and expandable computing system for achieving customers' business goals.

The UltraSPARC family is the processor family behind Sun's leading enterprise computing offerings. This architecture leverages a unique combination of semiconductor design expertise, leading application performance,multiprocessor scalability, binary compatibility and high bandwidth to provide companies a competitive advantage by enabling the development of highly reliable, differentiated systems.
