Fujitsu to Introduce Handheld PCs for Windows CE, Handheld PC Professional Edition

-- will leverage close collaboration with Microsoft to provide multiple Windows CE-based solutions for global market --

DENVER, October 12, 1998---In conjunction with the U.S. release of the Microsoft Windows CE operating system, Handheld PC Professional Edition, version 3.0, Fujitsu Limited today announced that it is developing and plans to introduce next year several handheld PCs supporting the new operating system software. Featuring large screens of VGA resolution or better, pen as well as keyboard input, tablet and clamshell configurations, the handheld PCs will be based on Fujitsu's INTERTop, a half-notebook-sized PDA available in Japan since 1997. INTERTop is an affordable, compact and extremely lightweight mobile solution that boasts full network functionality and the largest screen (7.2 inch) of any PDA in the Japanese market.

Fujitsu is currently developing Windows CE-based Handheld PC solutions to meet a broad array of horizontal and vertical application needs and will market the systems worldwide, including in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. North American and European vertical sales and marketing will be carried out by California-based, wholly owned subsidiary Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc. At the same time, Fujitsu PC Corporation, which has successfully marketed the LifeBook family of notebook computers in the U.S., is evaluating how these solutions will complement its future technology and product roadmaps. Enterprise field workers and corporate office staff in a wide range of industries as well as individual consumers can expect to benefit from the advanced technology and IT solutions expertise that Fujitsu brings to handheld PCs.

Through its relationship with Microsoft Corp., Fujitsu has played an important collaborative role from the earliest stages of development of Windows CE, Handheld PC Professional Edition (the third-generation software from Microsoft for the H/PC). For example, Fujitsu has provided several hundred INTERTop "CE development platforms" used for a significant portion of the testing of the new software. Geoff Walker, vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. (FPSI) said, "As the dominant leader in the Windows-based pen tablet computer market, FPSI is committed to leveraging the expertise we've developed over the past six years into pen tablets running Windows CE, Handheld PC Pro Edition. We expect the Handheld PC Pro Edition of Windows CE to have a significant impact, advancing Working Mobility(TM) in the enterprise and portable computing in general."

"Microsoft is pleased by Fujitsu's commitment to support Windows CE, Handheld PC Pro Edition", said Harel Kodesh, vice president, Consumer Appliance Group, Microsoft. "By supporting this optimized operating system for H/PCs, Fujitsu's new Handheld PCs will help give mobile professionals a companion tool to create, edit and access information while away from their PC."
