Tokyo, November 4, 1998 -- Fujitsu Limited and PFU Limited today announced a new global brand of UNIX servers together with a clustering solution based on Fujitsu's SPARC64-GP processors and the Solaris operating system. Starting today, Fujitsu will market the new GP7000F servers, developed jointly by Fujitsu and PFU, in Japan, Asia/Pacific, North America and Europe. Running a wide range of Sun-compatible Solaris applications, the GP7000F systems are designed to address customer requirements for secure and highly available application environments.
Fujitsu will be displaying the GP7000F series at the Fujitsu Solution Fair '98, November 18 - 20 at Ikebukuro Sunshine City Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo.
The SPARC64-GP processors are 64bit RISC chips that conform to the SPARC V9 architecture jointly designed by Fujitsu, Sun Microsystems, and others. The SPARC64-GP achieves the world's best performance for SPARC V9 architecture. Other technologies, such as the world's fastest cross bar switch and enhanced I/O bus performance, also add to the overall performance of the GP7000F models.
Two GP7000F models will be available at the launch: the Model 200 and model 600, which are 2-way and 8-way capable, respectively. Initial systems based on 225MHz and 250MHz processors will be increased to 275MHz and 300MHz during 1999. All systems can be clustered and a 128-way SMP server is currently being planned.
Both GP7000F systems have advanced RAS (Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability) functions, including a new System Control Facility (SCF). The SCF has a dedicated processor that tests for, detects, logs and reports system malfunctions. These standard features deliver high reliability and ease of systems management.
"GP7000F worldwide servers are for customers wishing to deploy business critical applications on stable, high performance, well engineered, and cost effective platforms," said Mr. Kazuto Kojima, Senior Vice President, Fujitsu Limited. "Performance, Reliability and Security have been the watch words of this project from its inception," he said.
"Our commitment to the Solaris operating system is also evident in the work we have done to ensure system availability and serviceability," Mr. Kojima said.
As part of Fujitsu's commitment to Solaris, the GP7000F includes Solaris operating system extensions to enhance the serviceability of the product. These extensions provide access to the System Control Facility plus network and cluster tracing. These new features not only improve system availability, but also provide fast tracking of system and application errors.
Further reliability, scalability, and flexibility will come through Fujitsu's "Safe Series" software products based on its advanced interconnect technology. Initially supporting clustering of 16 nodes, the "Safe Series" will support 64 nodes by the year 2000.
Three products announced in the "Safe Series" are:
In addition to the products announced today, Fujitsu is continuing to enhance its Solaris-based solutions.
- SafeCLUSTER for building the clustered system
- SafeDISK for data security through mirroring
- SafeFILE for better control and recovery of file system
The following items will be the subject of other detailed announcements:
The base specifications of the new GP7000F models are:
- SPARC64-GP enhancements - 500MHz+ in year 2000, 1GHz+ in year 2001
- Further Solaris enhancements developed jointly with Sun Microsystems
- Solaris environment on IA server products
- New Fujitsu Middleware products for the Solaris environment.
