Fujitsu Introduces Seven Models of 3.5 Inch Hard Drives for OEM market

- New models feature 3.24GB capacity per disk, high speed 7200 rpm -

Seven Models

Tokyo, June 16, 1998 --- Fujitsu Limited announced seven new models of internal 3.5 inch hard disk drives today. Aimed at the OEM market, the new drives include five models of the MPC30XXAT series, with 3.24GB of capacity per disk, and two models of the high speed MPC30XXAH series, which feature operate at a 7200 rpm. Both series will go on sale worldwide immediately.

All new models support the Advanced Technology Attachment-3 (ATA-3) interface and ultra-Direct Memory Access (DMA) transmission which enables high-speed transmission of up to 33.3MB/second.

Due to the recent developments in multimedia and the increasing memory and disk space demands of operating systems and application software, the amount of information handled by personal computers continues to increase. At the same time, due to the expansion of functions of the ATA interface for peripheral devices, hard disk drives have been introduced in many kinds of equipment. Not only for personal computers, but also for servers, faxes, communication devices, and even karaoke machines. Based on this, there has been increased demand for greater capacity and higher speeds in hard disk drives. Fujitsu's new hard disk drives have been created to meet this demand.

MPC30XXAT Series

With the adoption of Enhanced Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (EPRML) signal processing technology and the use of a high-performance Magneto Resistive (MR) head developed with Fujitsu's advanced technology, this series has raised the linear recording density to a maximum level of 200,882 bits per inch (bpi), the highest level in its class. Furthermore, along with the rise in track density, the capacity of each 3.5 inch disk has been increased to 3.24GB, or 1.5 times the level of Fujitsu's previous product.

Featuring one to three disks in the one-inch thick disk drive, a wide range of recording capacities are available: 3.24 GB, 4.32GB, 6.48GB, 8.45GB, or 9.74GB. The series is therefore compatible with a variety of systems, from an entry-level PC to a PC server.

MPC30XXAH Series

Revolution speed has been accelerated from the previous 5400 to 7200 rpm, which both compresses disk revolution waiting time and greatly increases internal data transmission. In addition, models in this series are equipped with a 512KB data buffer, allowing efficient read/write processing. With high-speed positioning technology, the average seek time has been reduced to nine milliseconds (lead time). These technologies have led to an overall increase in throughput.

Available in the series are two models, one with 4.5GB of recording capacity per inch of thickness, and the other with 6.5GB. These products will fill a variety of needs for high performance hard disk drives in high-end personal computers, PC servers, work stations, and communication systems.
