Fujitsu to Supply RAN System for KDDI's CDMA2000
1xEV-DO Standard 3G Mobile Network

Tokyo, August 8, 2002-Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has received an order to supply a radio access network (RAN) system for KDDI Corporation's synchronous IMT-2000 CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-standard 3G mobile network operating in the 800 MHz spectrum band. KDDI's new CDMA2000 3G mobile network is expected to begin offering commercial services in the second half of 2003.

The new system is among the largest CDMA2000 network systems to have been ordered to date in Japan and will handle commercial service in the busy Tokyo-Nagoya-Osaka corridor. Consisting of a radio access network and an IP network, Fujitsu was selected to supply the RAN system.

Compared to the existing CDMA2000 1x standard, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO can achieve significantly faster data transmission speeds of up to 2.4Mbps. The IMT-2000 wireless technology makes it easy to perform Internet searches as well as transmit and receive photo images and other multimedia data from mobile phone handsets, PDAs, and notebook PCs.

For this project, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., which has operational experience with CDMA2000 3G wireless communications networks in Korea, will supply Fujitsu with base transceiver stations and base station controllers. As the primary contractor for the project, Fujitsu will deliver the equipment to KDDI and have overall responsibility for systems integration, from installation to maintenance.
